For a "drive home" I'd disconnect the heater lines at the timing cover and put in a bypass hose. Then you could deal with a better fix at home.

I have a friend that is looking for a #4 main bearing cap for 287/316 '55/'56 Pontiac V8 or the same part from a 288/317 GMC V8. He'll buy the whole set if necessary. #4 is the thrust bearing.

I used both iron and stamped steel water pumps for many miles in my '57 GMC (Pontiac) 347 daily driver with A/C for 22 years. Both worked well.
