doug nash ratios

im looking at a used trans. Is there away to verify ratios from the serial number on the trans? it is an old one that says doug nash, not richmond.

i guess 5th is alwas 1:1 if it is a nash. Only Richmond introduced the OD

Since I own a couple of these things, One at my house for the 64 GTO and one at a friend's house for parts, here is the ratios you requested.

The GM street 5-speeds (made by DOUG NASH) came with 3.27, 2.13, 1.57, 1.23 and 1:1 gearing 26 spline input shaft and the good rear yoke (I believe from a Turbo 400 trans). The speedometer gear is on the Chevrolet side of the trans.

Hurst made a decent shifter and Leonard Long made a great shifter.

Gear Ratios were all the same for the NASH STREET TRANS EXCEPT THAT NASH DID OFFER A TRANS TO GM THAT WAS DIFFERENT AND HAD THE GOOFY RATIOS THAT GM WANTED FOR THE CORVETTE. He sold very few of those trans in production vehicles. I believe the trans was also a overdrive trans. Richmond took the failed GM Production Trans and sold some of those transmissions. (Failed on sales, not quality or durability.)

If it is an original Nash Richmond used to could verify what it was built with. They did my "race" version. Mine came with a Mopar input and output for GM and had 4th and 5th 1:1 since it was a "Stocker" transmission.

It is also easy to pop the cases open and count teeth or find a number and work down a chart what it is. I've got some charts and assembly manual I can copy if you need it.

The Nash had about a 5 digit number stamped on the front/top of the cases.

Doug Nash was a Skilled Trades Guy before he made his 7+ Million with the Doug Nash Transmission sale. I knew Doug personally and his second wife. He was involved in the very 1st Lightning Truck project I headed. In his later life he retired and owned two large fishing boats down in the Gulf of Mexico.

I mentioned earlier in this thread about his special Chevrolet Trans. Here is a write-up
and picture of that trans.

There is a nice picture of the trans in the article. The article also has a video and instructions on how to rebuild
the 4+3 trans. Like I said it a earlier post, that trans does not resemble the Nash 5 speed trans at all.

I can't speak of verifying ratios via serial # but here's a chart of what was available. The ones marked is what I have.

VERY GOOD INFO ON ONE SHEET FOR THE CRASH BOX RACE TRANSMISSIONS.

There you go Skip, now you have a very good piece of info for your NASH Race Trans.

Rumor has it he also ran a 4 speed in it......Doug Nash 4 speed! :)

Doug ran a Ford Comet with a 4 speed manual trans BEFORE he ran the Bronco built with a auto trans (3 speed). So NHRA has it right in the link attached and the Bronco never saw a Doug Nash 4 speed which came years later.

So I agree, I would call that a rumor and nothing more.

Doug was involved in a lot of Pontiac Projects with Herb Adams, but he did special work with all three of the OEMs at the time. But enough History and Rumors.

That DORF really started to fly after he put the blower on....great racing back then, not like now!

Mine is now a 2.80, 2.22, 1.77, 1.33, 1.0. It does not have the "torsion bar'. Years ago the guys at Richmond even sent me a Nash assembly manual. I can tell you to work on one you need a GOOD large snap ring pliers. The stout snap rings will bend a cheap one!
