Update on Plastikote 208 engine paint

2 Attachment(s)
Well, I finally received word from Valspar/Sherwin Williams about the lack of Plastikote 208(light Pontiac blue) paint.
Looks like I may go back to VHT and see how close it is. Too bad- I really enjoyed the shade 208 produced.

That's too bad, I always had good luck with Plasti-Kote.

That info really blows
Plasti-Kote was the best engine enamel in aerosol .

Thanks for the heads-up JC

Bill Hirsch has the best high temp engine paint, pricey but great ,and indeed it's still made!

If you have a valve cover or whatever which has color that you are pleased with you can take it to an ACE hardware store and have them mix up any quantity wanted of oil based enamel in a matching color. Of course you will need a means of spraying it. I have found that this provides an engine paint that is just as good as 208, Hirsch's stuff (which isn't any more heat resistant than anything else out there), Duplicolor, or anything else.

How about "Seymour EN-67 Hi-Tech Engine Spray Paint GM Blue"

There's a thread here. Shows all the engine paint colors through the years. Many have paint codes, you can use to have paint mixed. Not sure if the 208 color is one, though...

This is the page with the various paint colors used over the years: http://www.pontiacpower.org/enginecolor.htm Plasti-Cote #208 was for 1959-1965.

I’ve used KBS Coating engine enamels and they work/look great. IIRC the company is headed by someone who left POR-15 to start making a “better” product. Their high heat XTC looks great on exhaust manifolds too. Here’s the link For the engine colors https://www.kbs-coatings.com/Motor-Coater.html

Sad deal about Plastikote.... I ran into a dead end for particular project, fortunately my customer was able to find a case. All the good stuff is going away :(

Well, Seymour invented aerosol spray paint in cans. (spray bombs) Hopefully, they will keep making them . I have used other KBS products, not engine paint. Extremely durable. Very tough and chemical resistant.

Glad I got a few extra cans from Ames a couple of months ago.

I just took a sample to a paint guy and he mixed it up. Used fast reducer and sprayed it on, works great. Nothing you can do about it burning off the center ex ports.

I've been having my engine builds professionally sprayed for years with an epoxy base paint.
My go to paint is the Dupli-Color DE 1616
The ceramic resin works very.
I would see if you can find the #208 in a Dupli-Color

Formulajones 05-16-2020 07:45 AM

I've always bought it in Duplicolor because it's readily available. There are several stores around here that carry it so if I need 3-4 cans I can swing in a couple stores and have it all. It's still on the shelves here.

The Plastikote was never carried by more than 1 store around here so it was never really a "go to" brand for me because if they were out of stock I was out of luck.

Here is the info on a small can I had made up when I re did the engine for a solid roller back in 06. Brought a can of the correct rattle can paint and a knowledgeable paint guy who just looked at it and mixed it up.
I would think a paint pro could get the info off the side of my can and have some mixed up for their use.
All you need is a compressor, fast reducer a 20$ Harbor Freight paint gun and a respirator and do it yourself.

That color is not 208. That's the 66-70 blue -silver metallic. 208 is the robin egg blue from 59? - to 65. My motor here was painted with the Plastikote 208.

shaker455 05-17-2020 07:31 AM

That came out very nice!
Yes I know the DE1616 is not 208
I suggested matching the 208 with a Dupli-color paint
