Mecum: Jim Wangers cars at auction

I haven't seen any posts on this and I just came across it myself.

Did you see the 5 cars from Jim Wangers' old collection just sell at Mecum??

His GeeTO Tiger, the Ponte Carlo(where I first met Jim street racing in the 90s with it) and more.

https://www.mecum.com/auctions/india...rs-collection/

The site shows the race car selling for just $33,000?!?!? Can't be right. The Ponte Carlo for just $18,700??!!

Anyone with more info?

The upcoming auction was mentioned in this thread a few weeks ago. http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=827228

Shocked they sold so cheap.....

Firedup6975 05-19-2019 02:10 PM

I watch Mecum and Barrett, Pontiacs always sell in my opinion low except for any 69 TA’s come across the block, and of late 77 SE Bandit TA’s since Burt died. Everything else including GTO’s seem to priced on the low side. Depends who is in the room and how much they want to spend.

Where else to buy a 10 second '66 GTO for $30,000? I can't believe that car went so cheap--and the '69 GP for $30K!!! I'd have come home with one of them if I had gone to Indy.

Pontiacs have typically never much sold for big money, even at the over hyped B-J auctions.
Yes there have been some big money spent on low to no miles original cars. Nothing surprising here to me.
I've seen tons of seemingly pristine Pontiacs sell at BJ for bargain prices...

tolerico 05-19-2019 03:14 PM

Yeah, while I was not looking to add to my stable, when something like these sell for way less than I (and the overzealous auction estimators) truly feel they would go for, I sure wish I was on top of this and then simply bid on the internet.

Don't have to see these cars in person (which Pontiac guy hasn't over the years seen these cars already) to buy them at these prices.

A no brainer. Someone got a smoking deal on what I think most would agree have a cool place in recent Pontiac racing history with some provenance to boot.

But today's buyers seem to favor and are willing to pay more for a Solstice GXP (a nice car - but still). Doh.

Cheap?!?! Some people need to separate their passion from reality. All those cars sold at about what they were worth in the "real" car world with the exception on the Solstice which went for about 5 to 8 grand higher than they normally do.. Also, Mecum is not the place to sell cars owned by a big name person. Fact is, its a good place to get screwed.

The GeeTO tiger for just $33k is an absolute joke of a steal.

Sad actually.

Can't find or build a car with such cool provenance for that.

Absolutely right.

It says the 66 GTO was built as a tribute model.

I'm aware of that. And I've seen the car in person, and seen it go down the strip.
33K is still way too cheap for that car.

geeteeohguy 05-19-2019 06:25 PM

Agree that the GeeTo Tiger was an absolute steal at 33k...tribute car or not, it has its own history and association with Jim, and will always be a valuable and desirable car. Who wouldn't want to have it?

tom s 05-19-2019 07:39 PM

Remember those prices included the 5% in and 10% out commission!NOT what Jim got. Also did not count the shipping and the premium listing fee for Saturday.Had a friend with 6 cars there and they bought 2 of them back.Chance you take on a no reserve auction.Tom

mgarblik 05-19-2019 07:49 PM

You could have purchased the entire collection for about what Mecum felt the GeeTo Tiger alone was worth! (pre-auction estimate 150K) Like Tom said, it's a huge risk putting a car in a Mecum or similar no-reserve auction. Mecum makes out like a gangster no matter what happens. Those cars probably would have done better on Craigslist and that's just sad. I saw the GeeTo Tiger run in person many times. It was a strong runner and had a great body and paint. There should be a happy new owner out there somewhere. Hope it's not a dealer.

The truth is that no one outside the Pontiac community knows or cares who Jim Wangers is. I would have bought the GTO for that in a minute, even if I had to have someone else drive it. 10 second Chevys are a dime a dozen but a 10 second Pontiac is different.

Wangers and/or his associates had the choice whether to enter them 'No Reserve' or 'Reserve'. Although a few cars did ok with No Reserves, most did not. If you enter your car with a reserve and it doesn't meet it, they will lower the fee to the No Reserve if you tell them that's the best you can do. I've sold 2 cars at Mecum listed with a reserve and always got the 5% no reserve fee.

BTW, the dealers have way overpriced their regular Pontiacs and GTOs. Just look at Ebay and look at the ridiculous asking prices. 55k for a regular 65 GTO with the non original motor and just an average restoration? 49k for a base 69 or 70 GTO with an automatic? Not to mention 69k for a 2+2 that looks pretty good but when you look closely you can see where corners were cut. You see these same cars over and over. One I saw for almost 2 years! I noticed that 2 of the prominent dealers were not at Indy Mecum and I've seen them at every Mecum sale I can remember in the past several years. Could it be that they have too much unsold inventory? Very possible

I agree wholeheartedly.

I have been surprised there were no comments on this.
