PS and Alt bracket questions
I think I'm in trouble. I have a 71 LeMans with PS that came with a 350 2bbl. The engine is a 1968 400 out of a GTO with PS that has Edelbrock aluminum heads. I'm running into trouble with the brackets to mount the PS and Alternator. I believe that all the brackets I have are from the 71 350. Nothing seems to be aligning right. Looking in the Ames catalog they don't list any brackets for a 71 or above. The brackets I have don't look like the brackets they show in their catalog.
Can I assume that Pontiac made changes to the mounting brackets for 71 and up? Should I try to find a complete set of brackets from a 68? The 400 has the 8 bolt water pump, if that makes any difference. |
Can you post a pic of the brackets you have?

I would change the timing cover and pump to the 11 bolt. but that's just me.

What part numbers are inscribed on your WP pulley & crank pulley? Everything can be done easily, as long as you are not trying to mix & match from different series (staggers) of pulleys & brackets. Have a pallet rack section just devoted to original pulleys, brackets, PS pumps, & original casting WP's. For the very anal restorer, offer original date coded correct casting WP's, rebuild them with correct cast inpellers in build sessions, several times a year.
'71 up Pontiac V8 uses the 481040 or 481039 WP pulley & a '71/'72 will have the teardrop shaped PS pump reservoir with the stamped steel PS pulley that has two dime size holes in the face. If you want to run earlier 11 bolt timing cover pulleys & brackets, I usually put together setups based off the correct late '60's Pontiac V8 PS pump & pulley, along with the alum pivot block, "hockey stick" bracket & bolt, & the correct '70 model pulleys, all so the common tall 11 bolt WP can be run. Personally, I try & run the '71+ brackets & pulleys on the '71's & up cars (71's 72's are what I do!) , as the late '60's style pump & brackets look out of place under the hood of '71 & later Pontiacs. Similar deal on '65-68's that have been pieced together with later mid 70's engines/accessories, have helped a ton of folks out with either original for the needed year brackets, pulleys, pumps, etc, OR helped convert their '65-68 Pontiac V8 engine over to 11 bolt timing cover & tall 11bolt WP with a SFI rated damper & late '60's PS pump, correct fitting pulleys, etc. Feel free & email or PM. |

Crankshaft 481037 YA Power Steering 481042 XD http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z...pspjkd7rnt.jpg The 68 GTO came with AC also. I've moved twice since it's been apart and I am 99% sure a box of parts is lost. Also all of the pictures that I took over the years were lost in a fire so I'm going off of a 58 year old memory, which might be failing!! lol I really don't want to go through the expense of converting to the 11 bolt water pump. |
every part you have pictured except the strap type alt brackets is '71-74 usage with 10SI alt (the most common '71-76 case design). A nice used 11 bolt timing cover, the long alt bolt, & a common tall 11 bolt wp will get you there much more affordably than sourcing a rebuilt late '60's Pontiac V8 PS pump, brackets, & both matching wp & crank pulleys.

I went through this a little bit ago. Here is what I did, but it might not work for you because of the later alt bracket might not fit on the 8 bolt pump.
http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=790152 I had the problem of 69 heads not having the hole for the alt pivot bolt. |
I just looked through my shelves and found the housing and water pump from the 71 350 engine. Is it as easy as bolting it on? Would I need to change out the crankshaft pulley?
Great info guys, I really appreciate it. Matt |

Finally!!! Something is going right with this!!! LOL
It seems like every time I start to do something on this, it turns into frustration. It all gets resolved but it drives me nuts. Far too many years have past from disassembly to reassembly which makes it hard. But it is getting there. I hope to be driving it sometime this summer. I sure hope it goes for more then a mile!!! |

I'm going to get new ones as well as a new seal. Fortunately the timing cover is in pretty good shape. Just a little pitting around the hose neck.

on the crankshaft, does the spacer go between the shaft and pulley or the outside under the bolts?
