Rifles: What platforms do you prefer?
 

When it comes to my bang-bang's, I like some variety. I've done a few AR's in the last year or two, and I really like the versatility of that platform. But I've thought about branching into other makes. My son keeps bugging me about wanting a Mosin Nagant or a K98. If I could find an M1 Garand for a reasonable price, I'd consider that too. I've thought about picking up an AK as well. Hopefully prices will come down since the Russian embargo drove prices into Stupid-ville.

I've done a few AR's across a small spectrum, from a basic A2 hanguard/front sight setup, to a lightweight build with free float keymod front end, to a 9mm AR pistol.

The 9mm AR is a FUN shooter. My Hi Point 9mm carbine is also a fun ride, even tho it is not a gun you brag about to all of your friends (...cue the old moped joke).:D

What are you guys into?

I have like a variety. For Plinking I really like my Noveske/Seekins Precision AR,
Favorites are M14 Crazy Horse, SIG 556R, or my SCAR 17.
Truck carry is a SBR 9MM AR

Are you a veteran? If so, the Civilian Marksmanship Program sells surplus Garands direct to your door. Last time I checked they were $600.00.

As I recall, if you're a veteran and fax in your DD214, there's no other paperwork required. Nice.

I'm mostly a target shooter. I prefer bolt actions. I've owned an AK and shot buddies AR15s. I just burn though ammo. I'm a bit more methodical with a bolt. I have rifle with real rounds too but more than anything I tended to lean towards my .17 HMR. A lot of fun at a reasonable cost.

I too prefer bolt action rifles, my two favorites to shoot are my sporterized 7x57 Spanish Mauser and my custom .308 made with a VZ24 action.

Bolt action (pre'64 Winchester 70, Mauser, CZ), as well as falling block single action (Winchester 1885). Also ancient 1873/1892/1894 Winchester lever guns. Not into semi-auto actions at all or burning up tons of ammo. I like to hit with each shot.

I shot competition with ARs and a custom bolt gun. The AR can be amazingly accurate, easily matching bolt guns out to 1000 yards, just not with a 5.56/.223. If you're burning ammo, you only have your itchy finger to blame. ;)

My heavy target gun can lob 'em into a 10" circle at 1000 yard if I can read the wind worth a dang.

I've got quite a few of the ones mentioned , but lately I leave the AR's, the M1 and all of the bolt actions and grab the M1A. I have a blast with that gun. I also like the lever actions, doesn't matter the caliber I just enjoy shooting them.

My wife would love to own and/or fire one. :D

My latest, 1903 "Springfield" Remington made 1942 A4 30-06. Will shoot minus 1 MOA at 200yards.

I have a AK,SKS and a side by side 10 gauge shotgun with a few others. The best and greatest platform i would shot in almost any situation is my Winchester lever action 30-30 with iron sights. The rounds wil stop whatever you aim at center mass

I can totally believe that on a custom AR platform built specifically for long range. Or even an off the shelf special like a Ruger RPR. But if your telling me that a run of the mill AR-10 is going to be competitive with the guys out there shooting F CLASS firing $8 a shot 6.5x284s, 7mm SAUMs or name your other exotic target round. I have a tough time buying that.

One of my more guilty pleasures has been my arsenal AK made in vegas . A bit high for an ak but the quality and accuracy are exceptional for the platform . Cheap to shoot as well . However my garand & m1a's are my favorites . Do your homework on the garand though . They can be damaged by commercial 30.06 as they are not designed for those pressures . Research is key to buying a garand just like a vintage Pontiac . Too much to get into here but I'll say this , they only all original ww2 m1 you'll ever see is in a museum some place . So if you see one advertised as all original with a big price tag - walk . They have been in many wars , repaired on battlefields and rearsenaled who knows how many times . Oh , and it'll hit the target every time you pull the trigger - as does the AK lol !

Several, but I really enjoy my Ruger 77/.357.
Impossible to find, build quality is just OK, but it shoots 38 special and .357 magnums which I love!
ARs are fun because of the uppers you can interchange. I can change the bolt and shoot .22 LRs in 60 seconds. Really thinking about a .300 Blackout too.

I really like my Tikka Deerhunter rifle in 3006 nice trigger and very accurate, Armalite AR15, Springfield M1 Garand, Mauser K98, Polish AKM47 folder, M1 carbine. The Garand and M1 carbine are both DCM rifles.

Sometimes I think about selling these and get one rifle to do the job of many. Thinking that would be a Armalite AR-10. bt

get a mosin nagant NOW before the prices go up any higher, and get that russian ammo too, 2 cases..plenty of m1's out their, need to get one from some one you trust or that builds them,and guarenttees it.i got mine just before the movie Grand Torino came out,,LMR barrel ,2 stage match trigger, i can hit a # 10 can all day at 200 yards,offhand.feed it that greek 30-06.best hog gun ever...got a .223 saiga cheap back in the day, side rail scope mount, bolt hold open latch,great gun,feeds and shoots everything.maybe after a couple months prices will go down.id wait and see.

In F-TR they are, I shot a Stag model 6 for a while but the drop from 600 to 800 was severe, even with 75-82 grain .223s that were loaded so long I had to single-shot 'em as they wouldn't fit in a magazine.

I do shoot a 7 SAUM now and it's nowhere near $8/round, more like 0.85-$1.10 depending on bullet. I love it. Most accurate rifle I have ever fired. I shoot in F-tactical now with just a rear bag and a bipod. The F-open guys with the joystick rests and sled guns are who I don't really feel like competing against. At that point it's a trigger pulling competition.
