68 carpet installation

Does the carpet at the rear bolts of the bucket seats get a special cut to cover the rear track bolt or does the seat just bolt on top?

Greg Reid 01-16-2014 02:48 PM

I just posted a link to a 'how-to' in the interior tech section of the forums.

Is that for a f body or were they all the same?

Greg Reid 01-16-2014 05:32 PM

It's from an A-body forum so I guess you could safely assume it's for an A-body. However, I would think the process would be the same as far as how to measure for the seat footprint, where and how to make the cuts in relation to the studs in the floors and the like. Can't swear to it though.

Still looking for the answer if the carpet at the rear bolts of the bucket seats get a special cut to cover the rear track bolt or does the seat just bolt on top of the carpet originally?

It gets an L cut , the track fits under the carpet.

silverbullet07 01-17-2014 12:37 PM

so on a 68 the whole track is under the carpet or are you saying just the rear bolt area?

are the any pictures available of how they were originally installed.

The complete track is metal to metal, just a flap to cover the bolt.

I was reviewing the above photo and comparing it to the firebirds seat tracks. Since the firebirds seat tracks are not even close to being on the floor, I don't see cutting out the tracks like the photo suggest. The firebirds carpet cut out has to be different.

Many suggest that the rear seat mount is right on top of the carpet. The front portion of the carpet lays on top, covering the front seat mount.

You can do it any way you want, it's your project. Factory was metal to metal, that way the bolts would remain tight. Carpet underneath would eventually compress allowing space for the track to loosen.

silverbullet07 01-21-2014 12:41 PM

Yes I agree with that. Metal to metal. But you don't have to cut it like the picture above.

Sorry I posted... Didn't intend to complicate the matter. I thought they would be the same. I'd delete it if I could at this point. Perhaps a moderator could edit it out.

I found my original carpet from my 69 and it looks the same as the one shown.
