This is what it might have looked like 28 years ago.
These guys are headed for storage, and a slow restoration.
Agate red is an 80, red is a 4 speed and the black and 4 door are 79's.

Wow, I havent seen four 2nd gen GA's in one spot, well sense they were still on the new car lots!!!! And a four door also!!!!! I cant remember when I have see a 4 door 2nd Gen GA. Thanks for the pic's, and good luck with the resto's.

The 78 Pontiac sales brochure has a picture of the 4 door GA.
JMO: Being a product of the 60's generation, performance cars were always of the 2 door variety. When they introduced the 4 door GA, my thoughts were "now that's stupid". Four-door cars came to be popular in later years with the young set. But GM missed the mark with the 4 dr GA based on sales, as well as the 2 dr G-body fastback....the beginning of terrible decisions GM made over the years. Theyre still trying to dig themselves out of that hole.

back in the late 80's or early 90's the dealer i worked at took a black over gold 4dr g/am with factory wire wheels on trade. it was a 4dr 4spd car and was in nice shape.

the wheels were pulled immediately and sold to a collector the owner knew, rally 2's were put on it from a local salvage yard. the used car salesman was trying to sell it to me [ for what i thought was too much money] when a customer bought it for his son.

i often wonder what happened to it as we never saw it again.

Those are some cool pics. The black and gold one looks like one I saw from Texas when I was looking for my 78. The asking price was $6000.00. The pics of the car were beautiful. I should have tried to buy that car.

78400, you didnt miss out on the Texas car. TexasBobcat from this site went and checked it out and it had over 100K, not the low milage the owner stated. Car didnt even run. It did look nice though. Simon was the owner, but sounded like he didnt know anything about the car.
One in Iowa, the same color with 145K was bought and is being represented in MN as having 45K mile. Beware of that one too.
I have a black/gold 4 speed I'm draging back Tuesday.

In '78 the set cost $479 in the GA, $479 in the base GP, $439 in the LJ, and $359 in the SJ. N/A in the LM.

I put a set of the wire wheels on my red 4 speed, but changed them over to the 79 that's getting painted.

Mike, was the 4 door 4 speed a Grand Lemans with a V-6, or a Grand Am with a 301? Lots of Lemans and Grand Lemans with 3 or 4 speeds with the V6, but only the Grand Am offered a 4 speed with the 301, in 1979.
I'd love to find that 4 door!

it was a v-8 car that was loaded by my recollection. i know it had a tach dash, p/w, p/s and a moonroof i think. i had to be a special order car for the stick alone, let alone the rest of the options.

i should have bought it and stashed it along with several others that i either passed on or or a couple that i sold.

iowapub, good luck on those cars. That is a very cool pic, like going back in time. I always liked those Grand Ams. Maybe one day I can buy me a 73-75 or a 78-80 Grand am coupe with a 4-speed! That would be cool! :) David

Is the Agate red car the same one that was going to be parted out, and you rescued it? It looks like a different one. I guess you need to fill me in on that one.:)

Tom, The Agate red 80 was being sold as a roudy round car. Some Malibu racing (1/4 mile guys) guys bought it so it wouldn't be trashed. They PM'd me about it, so I went up to N.Y and brought it back. The car is loaded!! p/w, p/l, tilt, cruise, delay, defrost, p/antenna, trunk release, tach, gauges, trip odometer, rally IV's, a/c, cloth buckets, auto w/ slap shifter. Someone put an aftermarket sunroof in it and under the rear seat is rusted out....project #8.

I wanted to get 10 on 1 truck, but the 4 car hauler was a good deal.

OK, I think that is the one I was talking about. I thought it was not as complete as that. Was the original engine in it?
Too bad about the sunroof. I just HATE it when people butcher a rare car with an aftermarket sunroof.
BTY, Ralley IV wheels were standard equipment on '80 GA. Not sure if the tachometer was standard by 1980 or not. I think every '80 I've ever seen has the tach.
Curious about the 'slap shifter'. Is that something different than the ordinary floor shift/console?

I've always loved the '78-'80 Grand Ams. Much better looking car than a Malibu. Malibu's are a dime a dozen around here.

I think when I finish my GTO, I'll be looking for a nice '80 Grand Am. I still have the manual trans pedals, as well as Chevy & BOP bellhousings out of my '78 Grand Prix. It started with a 231 Buick, & it ended it's life with a 400 SBC.
