If you are gonna make a honset 500 hp, why scrimp on a few dollars? Spend a few bucks more and get a good one. I bought a Rollmaster from KRE looks like a nice piece, soon to be installed.

Nothing cuts like a Bridgeport. Still made in the USA!

"It is false economy to scrimp on any part that directly effect engine reliability."

goatman,
then wouldnt a gear set be the best?

Goatman 04-04-2003 04:55 PM

I don't know what a gear set is. A gear drive is two or three useless pieces of metal that transmit torsional and vibrational stress from your crank to your cam and back again.

The best chain is a billet roller. That is what I would use on almost any motor.

The only other alternative is a timing belt. A belt is 100% better than a chain, but, at just over $900, it's not for everyone.

On the 900.00 belt drive. How do they separate the oil from the belt area. I think yer talkin about rubber band drive? New pan or some kind of blockoff? http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...icon_smile.gif

goatman,
if you dont know what a gear set is,(a set of gears) in reference to timing how do you know a timing belt is exactly 100% better.I think they all have some advantage over the other.

birdman, don't f*ck around!
Get a true roller set (Dynagear is an excellent choice) & fogetaboutit!
What G-man is saying is true, like it or not.

A gear drive is a worthless POS that has no value to anyone, except possibly the hill billy next door that can't afford a blower but likes the "whine" it makes......

A gear set is installed in your rear end.....

Trust me, this is one subject I have done alot of research on.

The Rollmaster is a nice set. I bought mine from Merrick Motors--around 80.00. Very vesatile for degreeing the cam--9 keyway combos.

Love it when a person asks for advice, then wants
to argue with you when you give them a correct
answer. Almost as if they really just wanted you to agree with them and did not want advice at all.

Rollmaster make one of the best Pontiac chain and
gear set-up but the Dynagear is just as robust but
has less cam timing options. Tom V.

Actually, Rollmaster was what I meant to say.
But somehow Dynagear came out???
Comparing it to other more expensive brands I've used & seen, it's everybit as good & a better value.
Dynagear does makes a good oil pump.

I would also say use the roller set.All of the sets mentioned above are good sets to use. http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...on_biggrin.gif The gear set up adds additional wear http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...s/icon_mad.gif to the motor along with a constant noise .Use only the best brands inside your motor.

birdman 04-06-2003 10:29 AM

thanks for all the info!i will go with the rollmaster.ans tom v. i was not arguing, just when g-man said i dont know what a gear set is when we were discussing timing components seemed rude.my mistake i apoligze!
