Maximum compression with a turbo
I have aluminum D port heads that I am wondering what the maximum compression can be ran on E-85. It is a street engine that will be raced once a while. Mainly a grudge/ who is faster type of car for my group of friends.
The heads are 72 cc 340 cfm version from KRE that have been reworked by SD Performance. |
I don't have any real world experience with it, but I have been researching a supercharged E-85 application I'd like to build someday.
Everything I have seen online about E-85 is that no one really knows its limit yet. I have seen a few references to guys running 10.5:1 and 15-20 or more lbs. of boost, without problems. Albeit these are LSX and Mustang applications that I've read about. Another FYI, if nitrous is ever going to be thought about, it works with E-85 but it's not as potent as it is with gas. The E-85 already significantly cools the intake charge, so you lose that benefit of N2O. Nate |

Big Nate about summed it up... how much compression is determined by a bunch of factors... manifold air temp(compressor discharge temp) chamber layout, A/F ratio, cylinder to cylinder variations, possibly dynamic compression to some extent, probably more.

The higher the cr the smaller the tune window, I have heard of 11to1 with alcohol. with a turbo if you need more power -- add boost -- lol but id say e-85 and 10 to 1 with moderate boost should be fine

I agree with Curt. I did an LS RHS aluminum engine with single turbo for a H2 Hummer. 9:1 compression on E85. Made 1600 hp with a bunch of boost. Problem was the engine was lazy until the boost came on and then was uncontrollable. Now the customer wants less hp and more drivability. So I'm upping the compression for less boost. Funny how people think they want big power until they get it! Lol

You can always add more boost in the end start low and work your way up if more is needed. The nice thing about turbos are boost controllers
