Hmmm - "dual-quad set up" with no pics of the engine?!

"This Diamond in the rough is powered by a peppy 350 V8 with Edelbrock dual quad set up with an automatic transmission."

I liked the interior shots as I never knew there was "Custom S" emblem in the empty spot on the dash where the A/C vents would go. Perhaps an option?

P.S. I contacted the seller and asked if he can share some pics of the engine, especially the dual-quad set up.

There are some engine pics , but there are so many various pictures maybe your browser didn't load all of them.

I did see the #48 heads, but didn't explicitly see the T400 tranny or limited slip tag on rear.
All of those could potentially be add-ons , but you can't fool the PHS Invoice.
And they must not have that.

They kept the boxes from all the parts and filters for the 2x4 swap ....
and a vintage HPP mag about 350 HO cars
.... but didn't keep the original 4bbl set up and air cleaner ??

I'm thinking factory 2bbl car with upgrade(s) - IMO

Early built 69's had a nameplate on the dash of non-AC cars up until about February 69.
GTO , LeMans , Custom S , not sure about Tempest.
Well actually - the Feb cut-off applies to GTO/Judge , the others may have went longer... not my specialty on the others so much.

PHS would be the only way to really know if it was an h/o car as the baron said, definitely has turbo 400 and you can barely see the tag on the rear axle. Engine code and axle codes would be helpful. scroll down to full size pics on the ebay ad,

1969 was a weird year for A-bodies...I believe the only non-GTO A-bodies to be equipped with a TH400 is with a 350 (2-bbl) with A/C, or a 350HO with, or without, A/C...? Should hold true for the 4-doors variants...I would imagine.

If it has the right block code with a matching stamped VIN , that would satisfy part of my curiosity.

Does anyone else think of PY member North when they see this car ?
Believe he only needs 1 or 2 more cars to complete his Breakaway Squad.
But I forget which 1 or 2 are left that he needs

The emergency brake cables would have to fit with the turbo 400 cross member mount. Also To be an H/O 350 the turbo 400 would have its own code PS

Dan and I went to go look at the ’69 Custom S this morning, and I can report back that it is indeed a real factory produced numbers matching 350HO, 1 of 55 Tempest Custom S 4-door sedans (23569 body style)! The engine code is XU (EUN 0268241), the VIN on the block & TH400 (PS code 69-3540) are kosher, the casting dates are all tightly sequenced and the rear end is a tight XH code 3.55 HD Safe-T-Track. The alternator (1100704 8L5), distributor (1111946 8L6), drum brake master cylinder (BX, EX, or FX? stamp), brake booster (305 Julian date), pulleys, fan, and shroud are the born with pieces. The block and heads have casting dates of K068 and K138 respectively. The trim tag is 11D dated. It’s only missing the factory intake, 7029264 Q-jet, and the single large snorkel are cleaner.

The body is pretty solid with only the driver door (bottom) and both rear wheel openings and behind in the rear quarters with rust repairs and filler. The hood, deck lid, and front fenders (possibly older NOS replacements) are rust free. The trunk is amazingly clean and solid with its original spatter paint, spare and jack. The floors are solid too. The interior is really nice, clean and all original. The front seat upholstery is the only worn item. It looks like the headliner is newer as does the rear parcel tray (homemade).

The salesman said the widow consigned the car after keeping it for a few years (he died in 2020) and included all the extra parts in the car, which most are junk and not even for that car. She told him that her husband bought it new (ordered) and babied it. He had dreams of fixing it up and that’s why it looks the way it does. We guess that he was slowly converting it to his hotrod with the dual quad set-up. It has been a well-preserved car…not perfect, but far better than the pictures show. It definitely was garage kept most, if not all, its life…in Michigan, not too far from us.

So this car is as rare as a 69 TA Ram Air 4 , but more affordable.
Did you guys buy it ? Or just go browsing and investigating ?

The 3.55 HD Posi axle option is pretty awesome for a car like that too.

Hard to believe that someone would keep and care for a car that long and then just dispose of the original induction parts.
They have to be boxed up in his garage or shed somewhere

BVZ, We did buy it, but for a lot less than what they were asking. We're getting the PHS next week, but are 100% confident it is the real thing. I found the OO obituary of when he passed away in Dec. 2019 and it mentioned his "69 Pontiac Tempest" as one of his passions along with cruising and going to the local drag strip to race (that would be Mid-Michigan Motorplex, home of the Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race). I found his adult children still live in the same town only 45 minutes away, so I'll give them a call to see if they have any of the missing engine parts. The wife did move to a condo, so they must have got rid of a lifetime accumulation of stuff, which may have included the original intake, Q-jet & air cleaner.

It definitely PHS's itself , no doubt about it.

If the old HPP magazine article on 350 HO's had his production number printed in it that would have been cool if he knew it was 1 of 55.
I'm a little surprised there were even that many.

Yes, thanks go out to Post Toastie for finding out about it. Having it sit only 5 miles away is another benefit (I think). My brother and I are really attracted to the weird and unusual Pontiacs and want to save them, if they are worth it.

I'll try to talk to the son to see if they kept any of the parts off the car (highly unlikely, but I have to try). We need this car like another hole in the head, but the 'pull' was too strong...lol.

Anyone need/want a dual quad set-up? It's definitely coming off the car in the spring!

That car probably hurt some feelings at the stoplight drags. Congratulations on your purchase! The aftermarket intake reminds me of a 65 lemans hardtop that I bought from somebody local to me that originally purchased the car for the 4 barrel intake and carb for his convertible 65 gto he was restoring. I might have the 7029268 rochester and possibly the manifold.in my collection .

I would love to hear more stories about the car...hopefully I can make contact with the family and see if they are willing to share some.

I'm amazed that the 350HO's came with 60 lb oil pumps with the hardened distributor gear...RAIII stuff...not to mention the Morraine 400 bearings also. The standard GTO YS & WT engines just came with the 45 lb. pumps and non-hardened dizzy gear. Dan discovered on the DeskTop Dyno that the 067 and 068 cams made the same horsepower, but the 067 made more torque (10 lb-ft from 2500 to 5000 rpm). Back in 2006, Dan dyno'd a '69 350HO that had .030 over forged pistons on forged Eagle rods, an actual 10.6 to 1 static compression ratio, no porting of anything, with a custom ground cam (201/217/112 at .403"/.418" lift), air cleaner base, and F-body log manifolds made 340+ hp from 5200 to 5500 rpm and 400+ lb-ft 3500 to 3900 rpm. A-body logs made the same power exactly. A-body RA manifolds added only 4-5 hp & torque max over the pull range of 3000 to 5500 rpm.

This 350HO was going to go into a stripper Tempest post coupe, but ended up selling the car and engine separately before that happened, so we'll never know how it did on the track, but low 13's likely with 4.10 gears and a free flowing exhaust system.
