72 Grand Prix Coolant decal

I've scoured photos of 72 GP engine compartments off and on for months and haven't seen any with this decal. Even those that are described as survivor cars don't seem to have it. That being said, it doesn't mean they didn't have the decal at one time. Does anyone know if they came with these decals and if so, where is it placed? The emissions decal in my engine compartment is on the passenger side of the core support and while I usually expect to see it on the driver's side, this seems to be the original decal and placement. Thanks.

I'll say no. In 40+ years of following these cars, I've never seen one on a GP including several low mileage survivor cars. Interesting about your emissions decal placement, I've never seen that before.

I have seen the emissions decal on both sides in photos on the web, but mostly on the driver's side. I think I like it better on that side, so I'll probably move it when I paint the radiator support and inner fenders. I'm not sure if I'll use the coolant decal. Thanks for your reply.

If still in place, can you post a close up photo of your current emission decal?

Yes, it is still in place.

I was looking at the photos of this car in an article at autoevolution and noticed the emissions decal on the passenger side.

It's difficult to tell in the photo, but does your decal have a clear gloss film over the printed part? That's how I can usually tell an original from an older reproduction. Pontiac began using those in '71 and they tend to survive compared to the earlier years without the clear film. Attached is an example of an original from my old '71 GP.

That's my friend and member here KV's beautiful '72 SSJ. He was showing me that decal at that very show thinking it was the original, he worked around it and saved it during the restoration. It did not appear to have the clear covering over it so I'm not sure what to think? It was there when he acquired the car many years ago.

And here's a new YouTube video of the car from that same show.

I'm going to say that has the clear film. Not that it's easy to tell other than I can see scratches and scuffs in the decal, but they do not affect the lettering.
