Value of a set of 96 heads??
 

I am trying to figure out the value of a matched set of D port 96 heads. Date code B141 on both. These are fresh, ready to bolt on. Exhaust crossovers have been filled. Both intake & exhaust ports have had a mild cleanup done to them. Dont know who did the work. I got them with a car I just purchased. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The fact that someone went through the ports to clean them up can detract from the price you can sell them for, or add to it!

As for me I would want to see flow test results before I buy such heads to determine if flow numbers have gone up or down from stock.

If they have gone down them more porting work may beable to turn things around, but then that's just a added cost to whoever may have interest in them, and inturn that's less money for you.

The cleanup was just to remove casting flash.

Agree with Steve, I'd want to see flow sheets, or I'd negotiate w the seller to pay to have a few ports flowed. Also would be nice to know what valves were used in the rebuild process.

Value wise, in my book & ive had quite a few sets, IF they were just clean untouched cores they're worth more than 6X-4's & garden variety 62 & 13 casting big valve heads. With the work described, it's going to come down to, was the port work effective or a butcher job?

Sometimes people like to answer questions other than the one you ask! Why not start at $800 and go from there that's what I would do... I don't think they will sell quickly at $800 but hopefully for you I'm wrong!

Those ready to go heads look like used heads that have seen a clean up and maybe a valve grind. The filled crossover looks like a cold pour, the workmanship is suspect.

Valves look like used stock ones, gasket surface hasn’t been freshly resurfaced. Who knows what work was done to the valve guides. Replaced, knurled, bronze liners?

No records or receipt for the work, low value.

They’re a desirable casting number, but the common 6X-4 heads have close to the same chamber size and are a better casting for porting due to the revised port shape that started with the 1975 5C heads. Back in the day everyone wanted the #96 heads for their 9.5:1 455, today the 6X is now the favored head casting.

I’m not seeing anything more than a $500 set of heads. Untouched bare castings are almost worth that, frankly I’d rather have my trusted machine shop do up a set of bare heads than guess what might have been done to a set that are supposedly ready to run with no paperwork to show who did the work, what operations were performed and what parts were replaced.

$800 would be a gift for those in my opinion from an uninformed buyer.

B man, I am taking them apart tonight to check them out. Will get more & better pictures. Got them in Chino Hills California along with the car. They do have a fresh cut on the decks.

Not knowing what port work was done, what the heads actually flow, it's a crap shoot as far as "value" & that's why in my earlier reply I didn't put a price on them. I can see an easy $500+ going into that set of 96's for a decent set of 1 piece stainless valves & guides & a good valve job. Nearly every set of Dport 96's Ive ever owned came on a good 400 engine core or in a partscar, & left here on built 462.

We just pulled a cracked pair off of my car. Will sell for cheap, haha.

Just for conversation sake, post up a photo of the top of the head showing springs and such.

96's are still one of my favorite large chamber heads. They already have the large 1.77"exhaust valves and screw in studs so a lot of work is already in place. I'd put the value of a bare set of cleaned and mag'd heads at $500, and looks like old valves that are going to be tossed along with the springs so we are down to bare head value. These look to have been nicely cleaned but no history on magnafluxing.

I’m also in at approx. $500 value....I’ve also found that shipping is an annoyance for heads based on weight; local buyers with cash are hard to find sometimes

Keith- In Phoenix, as you may already know, nobody wants to pay anything for parts. I would say in the Phoenix market they would sell for 500. If you don't mind shipping you should get 800-1000.

It depends how close to Vegas you want to bring them.

Here are more pictures. Poor lighting when I looked at the date code. E141 code on both. Still have some blueing on the valves. All valves are brand new. New stem seals, push rod tubes have been elongated. retainers are made for lash caps. Mild cleanup in the intake bowls. I will probably take them down to Tucson & have Paul Carter go through them & check everything out.
