Carb question
Well, I just got this 72 Lemans and I need some advice. The PO had this car for 33 years and changed a few things from stock. He added an Edelbrock intake and a Holley carb. The carb is not right for the car, I think it is too big and it is just plain junk. I would like to put an AFB/Edelbrock or possibly a Summit racing carb on it. I am looking at a 600-650cfm. The engine is all stock except for the intake and I will be getting rid of the points and going to an HEI.
I am looking for reliable driver, not a street racer. Reasonable mileage would be a plus, but I know it is a big car, big engine, so I am realistic. Anyway, its a 350, THM350, all stock except for intake, what carb do you think would be best for this? AFB, Summit Racing, Q-Jet, Other? 600-650Ccfm or other? Thanks Scott |
How about a Proform 67207? Summit sells 'em for $430 plus about $15 shipping. It's 650cfm with vacuum secondaries (you want vacuum secs for the street. Anyway, I happen to have just such a carburetor, brand new, never had fuel run through it. And the best part? I'll take $300 shipped for it. It also looks a little nicer than the pic on the Summit site - it's got a little color to go with the silver. Look at one of the other Proform models and you'll see what I mean. PM me if interested. welcome to the forums.
congrats on getting a cool pontiac. P350's run great. all 3 of my reliable daily drivers have points. get a q jet. |
lets see pics of the 300$ lemans!

Forget the Edelbrock AFB style carb, very few ever work right. Go with a Q-jet (like Rock said) and get Cliff Ruggles book on Q-jets and set the carb up accordingly. Better for gas mileage and throttle response than a Holley or Edelbrock.
|
Another vote here for Quadrajet. Do some searches here on the forum and read up - there's a lot of great info here. Cliff R wrote the book on setting up a Q-jet (literally!). :)

Thanks for all the replies. I have found it better to ask before I buy than to buy the wrong thing and then try to make it work.
I also posted pictures of the car here:http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...=1#post4629304 Enjoy |
Been wondering what your $300 Lemans looks like so I clicked the link; Dude, nice find and a great buy!!!
|
My 400 came with a Carter AFB Competition Series carb. I changed to a Holley 650 dual feed and can't be happier. No bog or hesitations. :)

What kind of Edelbrock manifold do you have? Some, like the Torker 2, only accept square bore carbs. Better find out before you spring for a carb.
|
I have not dug into it yet due to time, but it looks like a spread bore manifold, possibly a dual plane. The Holley is square bore and has an adapter under it.
I may pull the Holley off and see if there is any hope for it, the cross over tube is missing and the holes plugged with a bolt. (the tube that goes between float bowls.) I know the cheapest route would be to fix that carb, but if it has been screwed up, I will go with a Q-Jet. And Yes, it is a very nice car for $300, even if I have to buy a $400 carb to make it run right. |
