301 Turbo on other engines
I found a rebuilt factory T/A turbo for too good of a price to pass up. Seems like it’s in really good shape, seller claimed it had zero miles.
Main question: has anyone ever ran one in a draw-thru setup, but not in a factory configuration? Seems like the turbo qjet and adaptor are expensive and hard to find. I was thinking of fabbing up an inlet adaptor for a holley, and running it on an old straight 6, perhaps even on my 326. Do you need to modify the carb to work for a draw-thru setup? I suppose it could be run in a blow thru setup as well. Is the juice even worth the squeeze? Or should I just sell it to someone with a Turbo T/A? |
On a Draw Thru Holley setup, it should act just like a Holley on a NA application.

Do you have a picture of this turbo?
Lately I have been seeing a lot of Buick 3.8 V6 turbos that people think are for a 301. There were a lot more Buick V6s made than 301 Turbos. I specialize in the 301 Turbo engine and make performance parts for them. If interested, take a look at my website. www.ttaperformance.com |

Anyway, here's some pics: https://i.imgur.com/9tS5Ff9m.jpg https://i.imgur.com/dcRKtFcm.jpg https://i.imgur.com/6qWmRg5m.jpg |
It does look like a 301 Turbo.
It would require a lot to adapt it to a conventional Pontiac V8 and honestly, the turbo is too small even for a 301. I have seen it used on a OHC 6. In fact there was a car featured in Poncho Perfection with one on a OHC 6. I think it was in an Astre. In all honesty, for the amount of fab needed to use this turbo in a custom application, you are better off buying an aftermarket turbo for whatever engine you want to turbocharge. |
"Skip" (Dudley) McCully and I had several conversations about installing two 301 turbos
on his 455 Pontiac vehicle. Told him that even with two of them the engine would be under-powered. Ken Crocie did a HO Racing Turbo set-up and it was written about in several magazine articles. Ken later did a Turbo upgrade/installation for a customer using a larger aftermarket turbo. (Written up in either Car Craft or Hot Rod Magazine. It made around 700 hp if I remember correctly on a 455 engine. Still a Blow-thru car/bonnet deal. Ken C has been involved in a bunch of magazine articles over the years. Once he figured out how to add the correct amount of fuel to the engine it had a decent hp on one turbo. The turbo was NOT a Rajay 301 turbo. Tom V. Tom V. |
2 of them on a 455 can make about 800hp in a draw through setup. Done and proven. The correct qjet for this turbo has a boost referenced power valve. Using a random Holley carb will not work correctly. The Pontiac 301 turbo has a .82 ar turbine housing. The similar Buick turbo is smaller.

Interesting on the QJ. for the 301T . The 301T that was apart (top end off the ling block) when I bought my 81 had a Holley 3310 on it i guess the previous owner used. maybe ran like crap is why he started taking it apart. Has head studs and supposedly an UD cam in it.
