CAMMERS @ AUCTION

The Blue Firebird hit a good number as far as I've seen for a Cammer.
Real nice Car and the Under the hood jewels helped!

This Tempest hit a fair number. With only one image and a lame description, it ended where expected. Looks like a good deal for a solid driver.

This Burgundy Firebird should be interesting. No under-hood images in the listing don't help, but it looks good.

What had me questioning any of these was zero mention of PHS.

Love the color combo on the '67. Thanks for posting!

Thank you very much for posting and keeping us updated I don’t have access. The Tempest was a steal.

It was mentioned and may be true about the fact that these were all AT cars may have been a slight factor??

Burgundy Firebird did fair.

1968 FIREBIRD ENGINE

Found some old build pictures of the '68s engine.
Great detail, wish I could find a video of it running, I bet it sounds awesome.

Jeff, did it have an aircleaner attached to the rear Carb? I never figured out how you were suposed to fit one o the side draft webbers in either a Firebird or A-body style.

Jeff Hamlin 01-29-2023 07:07 AM

Jeff looks like they only ran with the slip-on screens.

Thanks for the picture Jeff, you can see the clearance issue. Thats about the best I have seen, but I still don't think I would run a street car with just a screen over the carb.

It was why I gave up on the side draft webber intake I had many years ago. It seemed to make good power, but not much low end torque. Never ran it at the track so I don't know how it actually performed compared to stock.

Nice looking car. Always trying to learn something. Is the 3-speed automatic listed correct for this car OE? I would have assumed it would be running a "Tempest Torque", ST 300 trans for an automatic? Or did someone swap it for a Turbo 350? Just curious.

camerjeff 02-02-2023 11:08 AM

No you are correct, the transmission was either changed to the 3-speed, or it is an error in the listing. The 3-speed TH350 was available for part of the 1969 model year only, and was optional. The ST-300 2-speed trans is what was used for all 66-68 automatic cars with a OHC-6.

Good eye, I missed it in the listing, but I lost interest when I read the words Automatic Transmission. I just do not think the ST-300 and the 4bbl OHC-6 are a good match. They just do not perform well together. Not saying they are undrivable or breakdown prone. Just that they do not perform well, the ST300 works OKish in the base cars with the 1bbl carbs, but when you are expecting so performance with the car, they just come up short as a pairing IMO.

Thanks for the info. I had a 65 GTO with the 2-speed auto, and though it would still roast the tires from a start, the 1-2 shift at 70-75 MPH always seemed a little weird. I would think an OHC-6 Sprint engine with a Turbo 350 would make a pretty nice package. I had a 68 Sprint Firebird with a 3 speed manual trans. My first car. That combo worked fine. Eventually changed to a 4-speed. Pretty car in Burgundy.

Hokie1984 02-03-2023 02:35 PM

I had a ST-300 in my current Sprint, hated it. Slow off the line and shifted at a very high RPM point. If you floored it a 60 mph, it just didn't feel right. Anyways, switched to a Saginaw 4 speed. Had a three speed Sprint back in high school and that was also nice. Not as good as the 4 speed but perfectly fine. The 4 speed swap was probably best modification I made besides disc brakes up front.
