rear wheel well trim

Are the rear wheel well edges normally rounded at the edges? My front wheel well trim snugs up fine on the more squared radius on the front fenders. But, the rear trim seems to have a tough time snugging tight to the quarter panel. It has new quarter panels from the previous owner, so there should be no bondo radius at the edge. How are these edges suppose to look?

This is on a Lemans if it matters.

They should be fairly squared off if I'm reading your question right.
My car had some 'creative bondo sculpture' in that same area and it was very rounded off. I sanded about an inch or so of it off to find a lot of rust. I guess the guy just 'imagined' what it was supposed to look like. Maybe the aftermarket manufacturer did the same thing.

TJ post a pic

By the way, they are actually a little more complex than a straight up squared off shape. More like two angles. Like a 45 into a 90

The rear wheel lip should have a scallop to it if theres no bondo on a 70- 72. I put NOS wheel trim on the NOS full 1/4's and it takes some coaxing to get it to look as good as the front. Mine still doest look as good as the front but its pretty close. Definitely a weird fit in the back but the wheel trim does completely cover the scallop up when fully installed..

Yeah, scallop is a good way to describe it. It slopes about 45 degrees from the outer skin and then breaks 90 degrees off the first angle. If your trim is correct, the fender opening follows the same profile but the fender's body line is about a quarter inch outside the actual trim. Hard to describe. I'd post a pic but my phone is crapped out.

Maybe these pics will help.. Actually, now that I think about it, the profile is the same as the front fenders...just the shape of the opening itself is different.

Is the car a 70-72 or a 68-69?

Greg Reid 05-05-2021 08:11 AM

You know, I didn't realize that there was a difference in that area. In that case, I may be all wet on that. I'd delete it but I can't.
Here's a '70 something car...Yes, it's different. Sorry for the detour...

The 70-72 also has a scallop hidden under that wheel trim.

tjs72lemans 05-07-2021 08:50 PM

Yes, it's a 72. I was worried once the trim is snug to quarter panel, the radius of the lip would show. There isn't much of the trim that covers the top of the quarter panel .

scott70 05-08-2021 09:16 AM

I can say on my 70 the trim covered up all the scallop.

tjs72lemans 06-22-2021 11:28 AM

The only way I could get these to fit the contour correctly, was to use my cut off wheel and put cross slices in to bend the inside lip down some to match the quarter panel lip. I then put metal tape on backside of cut and smeared JB Weld in the cut and painted that with chrome paint. Now the car looks nice with the trim. You don't notice the cuts unless you bend down and look close. Most of them are in the upper areas of radius. Otherwise, it would not allow the trim and I wanted it on to dress it up. The fronts went on without an issue. I'm happy!
