63 tach location

I have a 63 GP and I'm slowly adding accessories to it. I just purchased a tach and the correct adapter, but it didn't come with mounting studs. So my question is, what size studs, and does anyone have a dash that can measure the hole sizes for the tach? Also exactly where do I drill the holes for installation? Thanks in advance for the help.

Brucee70 might be able to help you. Sent him a template last summer to help him locate the drill spots

Been a long time since I did one in a 63 GP.As I remember there is a stud and the other hole is for a bolt.I just moved the adapter around untill I got a good match on the dash, marked around it and drilled the wire hole with a 5/8 hole saw.It went thru very easy. Then drilled the holes.I do remember it was a PITA to get the bolt in to mount it.Maybe someone will have a more recent install.Tom

Thanks for helping, I didn't know what the wire hole size was. I will move the adapter around until I get a good location. Do you know which hole the stud goes in? or should I just use 2 studs and tighten them both?

Again as I remember it was a bitch to get my hand under the dash to tighten the bolt.I think you need one bolt to hold it to the dash. You might need to just get your hand up there to see witch one will be the best to be the bolt.Tom

I think you will find that the adapter only fits in one place with the tach attached to it and have flush contact with the chrome bezel. It has been a while, but I think mine had 2 bolts that held it on. and a hole in the center for the wiring. I think I had to do one bolt from the top without dash pad on and one from under the dash.

I know I did mine from under but as I said a huge PITA.Tom

Those are great reference photos! Thanks

Great info. Thank you. I will be changing my dash, so installing, or tightening, the nut on the back shouldn't be impossible. Then I can install the correct radio and remove the cd player. Thank again guys.

Dash pad comes off fairly easy. You can get to the bolts from the top and look thru the windshield.

I did mine through the top as well, since I already had the dash pad off.

It would be oh-so easy if the windshield was out (...or if you had two elbows on one arm).

I thought about having surgery too have an extra elbow installed!! The pictures are great. It takes out all the mystery as for the location. The last picture you have is the tach in the car, the color of your car is exactly the same as mine. Again thank you for the help.

Great piece of tech help here. I currently have mine on a shortened console with the vacuum gauge next to it but have the mounting adapter for the dash and plan on doing it properly some day soon.

Need nimble fingers on a 61, but it wasn't hard to do.

I finally got around to installing my dash on my GP. Now I'm trying to figure out where the tap is for the tach light. I have a new harness from the tach and the blue wire has both male and female plugs on it in series. Where in the dash harness do I plug it in?
