I am not posting this to ruffle feathers, but to ensure that when this sells, the buyer knows what they are getting.

This is a 1969-1976(?) Muncie three speed side cover (notice the two off centre bolt bosses):

I am not trying to say that there is anything wrong with a Saginaw transmission, they just don't have as high if a torque rating as the heavy duty three speeds, and should not be confused with the Muncie '330' three speed that Select Chevrolet vehicles started getting in 1969.
For 1969 the heavy duty three speed that Pontiac used was a Dearborn (Ford) unit.

My 69 Sprint came with that 3 speed Saginaw transmission.

i believed my research showed the two bumps on the case indicated muncie not saginaw. it may have been a bad reference obvious;y. Thank you for correcting my listing even though you are not interested in it.
attached is summit reference that indicates saginaw also.
no price change at this time. the shifter is worth what i am asking. thanks for the correction.

that number designation is how Hurst identified them;
The "330" number is the GM designation.
As a matter of comparison, Borg Warner (OEM parts manufacturer for alot of GM's stuff) designated the Saginaw three speed as a "301", and Muncie three speed as a "306".

The confusion behind OE vs aftermarket designation numbering is why people often refer to transmissions by their common order code (or RPO);
The trouble with RPO's is that even with the same model vehicle, year after year the same RPO could be a different sourced part.

Numbering aside, that chart does correctly show the single top/centred bolt for the Saginaw;
Side by side, they are very easy to mistake for each other.

If nothing else, us continuing to talk about this keeps your thread current - and easier to find by a potential buyer ;)

My '68 GTO came factory with a 2bbl 400 and M13. It was a Dearborn trans and it was heavy. Hurst shifter.
One of my '68 Camaro SS came factory with an M-13 And it was a 3 speed HD Muncie, with a Muncie shifter.
This car was 100% original when I got and sold it. The Trans was a whole YEAR older than the car. ( shelf life at the factory no doubt)
Had the protecto plate, No doubt its originality

Think the limit on the Saginaw was about 400 lb-ft (gross). Both three and four speed Saginaws were for smaller cars/engines. Pontiacs, particularly for big car loss leaders, found it cheaper to buy three speeds from Ford than tool up something new. Then the three speed Muncie became available.

BTW know that some Saginaw four speeds were made with a 2.98:1 first gear at least for 1978.

Took a closer look at your photo at the partial VIN stamp. 29U606xxx would be an OHC6 69 Firebird built at Lordstown, probably about June/July if a coupe. I don't recall if the base engine was offered with the Hurst, standard equipment would have been 3 on the tree, so this was likely from a Sprint.

Kind of almost makes me want it to try it in place of the 4 speeds I've acquired. My original was given away in the 70s by my dad, along with the ZH 3.55 Nodular posi.

this came out of my ohc 1 bl 3 speed on the floor 69. i removed both for a 455 and an m20. i do not know if shifter is original but i believe it to be.
