Ordered wrong size tires. BF TA 245/60 14
 

I mistakenly thought my rally 2 stock 14" wheels were 7" wide. Looks like they are actually 6" wide. I already purchased and received a pair of BF TA 245/60 14. I see that the minimum size width recommended for these tires is a 7" wheel. Will they mount, and would you use them temporarily until purchasing the correct ones? Going on the rear of 72 lemans sport with 225/70 14 on the front. Thanks Chris

Theyll fit but myself I dont like to go anymore than an 1" wider tread than the rim. Example 7" tread width on a 6" rim.

Per the specifications shown on the Tire Rack website, a 245/60-14 has a section width of 9.5" and a tread width of 7.9", with a recommended wheel width of 7" to 8.5". As said above they would physically be able to be mounted on 6" wheels, but I don't know how well they would work. Can you return or exchange them? If not, is getting some wider wheels, or having yours widened an option? One other question is whether the wider tires will fit your car.

I’ve had 245/60-14s on 14x7” Rally II wheel and they barely fit and look right on that width wheel, a 235/60-14 would be the best fit on a 7” wheel.

Mounted on a 6” wheel they’d look ridiculous like balloons. Return or sell them if returning them is not an economical option. Purchase some 7” wheels if you’re going to keep the 245/60s.

Your 225/70-14 front tires are 26.4” tall which is pretty close to the stock tire height and fill the wheel wells nicely. 245/60-14s are only 25.57” tall and are shorter by a good bit compared to your front tires. I would seriously consider buying another pair of 225/70-14s for the rear, there’s nothing wrong with running the same size tires on all 4 corners, they’ll look good and allow you the option of rotating them unlike a staggered tire setup.

Thanks for the excellent advise. I just ordered a pair of 225/70 14 to match the front. I'll hold on to the 60's and find a couple used 14 x 7 for a later install, if they don't sell on CL.

I’ve had 245/60 14’s on my 65 Grand Prix since 1994 on the stock 14x6 wheels and the worked fine.

I had 245/60-14 Goodyear Eagle ST's on my 70 GTO with factory 6" Rally 2 wheels.
Tires were hand-me-downs from a friend who was running them on a 72 Cutlass with factory 14x7 SSII rims.
I liked them and had no problems with them.

This took place back in the late 80's. fwiw

They are still on the car to this day. Put them in in ‘94..... my dad put the fear of god in me for wearing them down so they still look new!

Funny, "back in the day" (mid 80's), all us crazy high school kids stuffed 245/60's on our Rally 2's. If we were cool, we had 14x7's, but plenty of us still had the 6's.

I dont recall anyone having a tire problem because of it. Is it optimum? No. But is anyone planning to autocross a ancient GTO on steel 14 inch wheels?

Youve got the younger crowd now with the opposite,,,,6" wide tire on a 10" wide rim or whatever it is. Would think it would be easy to loose the bead and tire pressure. Looks goofy to me but whatever floats your boat.

29 years!?? I hope its a show car that's only driven on and off the trailer. Thats about 3x the safe life expectancy of street tires.

Unfortunately that car isn’t driven anymore than around the shop to keep things working. I built that car in high school and eventually gave it to my dad in 2009. It sits in his shop, gets washed and waxed once or twice a year. Car might have 25 miles in the past 10 years.

That car still looks exactly the same and the tires still look new!

I run 245/60/14’s on a couple of my cars. My convertible has 14x6’s on it. The back has 245/60’s and they mounted up fine and I think they look fine.

My 69 has 14x7’s and I run 245/60’s on the back of it too.
