The L79 is ready to go back into the Chevelle. I know this is not GTO related, but I'm very proud of this car and can't wait to get it back together.

Nothing wrong with a chevelle in my book. Looks nice!

Shiny 04-27-2024 06:17 PM

That looks great and glad you are excited.

The 327 I rebuilt and put into my 68 Chevelle during summer break from college was my all-time favorite. It wasn't anything special but came from a Corvette, had hydraulic lifters, and had "camelhump" heads. The sound of the secondaries kicking in will always be in my brain.

An L79 must be a beast. Nice!

Sweet! Nothing like a freshly detailed engine.

Rich-Tripower 04-27-2024 10:09 PM

In my book, the 327 was the best small block Chevy they ever made.

I'd love to line up my Chevelle with the 64 GTO and see what happens. But I can only drive one car at a time....

Of course it came from a Corvette….. ;)

There’s more Corvette engines out there than the number of Corvettes ever produced. :)

People ask me which of my 6 cars is my favorite and I tell them its whichever the one I'm driving at the time.

There were very few Corvette engines that were actually different than their equivalent that went into other Chevys. Take 65 for example: All the 327s that were 250hp, 300hp or 350hp were the same as available in the Chevelle other than exhaust manifolds and air cleaners and such. The 250hp and 300hp versions were also available in the full size Chevys. The 375hp fuel injected engine was the only one unique to the Corvette. Point being, other than the fuelie, nothing was unique about a "Corvette" 327.

When it came to the new for 65 396 Corvette exclusively got the 425hp 396 but Chevy and Chevelle got the 375hp 396 and the Chevy got the lower HP versions as well. The Chevy started the year with the 409 up to 400hp but that ended when the 396 came out.

Thanks Rich

I remember it as a 64 300 hp version.... L74?

I was 18 at the time and believed the seller so that's my story and I'm sticking with it...

Whatever it came out of, it was fun to drive and I hope you enjoy yours.

Engine looks great! I've had two '65 Chevelles. I loved them both! First was low mileage "little old lady" SS. Was 283 2bbl. But VERY nice! Still had original exhaust on it! One of the top cars I wish I could get back...

I think that's right, L74 = 300hp 327.

The last piece of the puzzle is ready to go in with the engine.

Just looked at your web page - car is incredibly nice and it's amazing what you accomplished, given the damage from that collision. Great story and easy to understand why you're excited about it.

Rich-Tripower 05-10-2024 08:50 PM

Yes, L79 = 350hp/327. All numbers matching: body, trans, axle, engine, even the original door panels. All of the trim is either restored original pieces or were NOS when the car was restored.
