1970 Trans Am Build Thread

Hi guys,

Some of you might remember me posting a picture of this car a few years ago. It's a 70 T/A RAIII 4 speed that's been sitting in this driveway for 20 years. In a strange turn of events, the owner actually found my car at a local show last night and remembered my Dad talking with him about his 70 over 10 years ago.

Long story short, he wants to sell it now. Its a #s matching RAIII 4 speed, no AC, with the original 12 bolt rear. It still has it's KR wheels, and even has two spares with snow tires on them. It also comes with some extra parts.

It has plenty of rust in all the usual areas. The rails look good though. The original 70 seats were stolen over 30 years ago, along with the original AM radio.

I know placing a value on it is tough, but any ballpark ideas?

Pretty sure 70's had JW wheels.
KRs are 72 wheels.

You know the drill, search what a restored one sold for recently and work backwards to get the worth of the car.Tom

65K top dollar ( right now on west coast) >> I put the resto at 55K ( done right) , that leaves about 10K for this car . all IMHO....
If I was to go down and look at it, I would want to jack it up...

You're right. I was sitting there looking at them trying to remember the codes, and with Sprints wonderful reception, I couldn't look them up. I should've seen the 72 code.

The owner shot out a 5k asking price. I countered with 4k. He said he has a NOS front spoiler for the car, as the original got blown out. I'll touch base with him this weekend and see if we can finalize a price.

He claimed it was running up until a few years ago, but the car hasn't left the driveway in 20 years. I was kinda thinking about getting the car mechanically sorted, power washing the outside and driving it. I'd obviously replace the interior, as that's become a mouse playground.

I think its a steal at 5k especially if the carb is there. You would likely still be upside sown after the resto though.

Hope you get it at 4! Can't go too wrong, parts alone and all...…

What is wrong with people? It is not like those cars became rare and valuable yesterday! (smacks head in wonderment)…..

Great find if it is original compleat engine it is a total steal. Good luck

Before I got to the "owner wants $5K" bit, I was going to say it could pretty easily bring $10K with the original drivetrain, etc. Wheels are not correct for a '70, but they could easily be swapped straight up for a set that are.
$5K is a STEAL.
This car is absolutely worth restoring, too.

muscle_collector 08-18-2018 10:17 AM

I cant imagine its not already in your garage. its been 20+ years since I was able to buy a complete 70 ta for 5k.

weranc55 08-18-2018 11:03 AM

Might need a little bit more than a power washing. You might need to give it a quick buff.

The Boss 08-18-2018 11:48 AM

Go get it, don't dicker on price, I doubt you're the only one he's decided to talk to and there are others who may know exactly where it is.

It's a funny story.

He saw my 71 driving around a few weeks ago, and wanted to talk to me, but he couldn't catch up (his words lol). He ended up coming to this car show to see if I was there, and luckily I was (it was an invitation only show). Talk about luck!

I tried calling earlier, but no answer. Hopefully I'll hear from him tonight.

I would be setting a land speed record for my wallet.

Baron Von Zeppelin 08-19-2018 05:59 PM

I'd be leery of pressure washing it.
Would want it to keep looking like it was all still in 1 piece without missing sections.

And definitely grab up some emergency cash and close the deal !
A good night of kicking over soda machines would practically pay for the car.

unruhjonny 08-19-2018 06:06 PM

wow - you lucky bum!!
