sneaky screw that holds the dash bezel to the pedal support

Although I've taken apart many 67 GTO/Lemans, my memory fails me on this.
There is a bracket that attaches to the back of the gauge pod and then attaches to the pedal support bracket. (my recollection). I can get my giant hands up there, and I feel the bracket firmly attached to the gauges, but loosely or not attached to the support. I can't see it. I think this is the main ground for the dash as lights etc work until I start depressing the clutch which is apparently causing the bracket to disengage
Does the screw that attaches it go from top to bottom, or the other way around?
Does anyone remember if this can be accessed from below without dropping the column?
space is so limited....

I believe you are talking about this one?

Therefore you can see the screw there which goes in from below.

Yes, that is it. Now to see if I can weasel it in without having to disassemble much. Is it the same 1/4 " head like the screws that hold it to the gauge, or slightly bigger.

Old Goat 67 01-24-2018 07:08 PM

It is bigger.

Can't tell you what size, I seem to remember a 3/8" head.

Same as I remember, Charles...

Thanks guys. I will take care of it this weekend.

If I remember correctly, I came in from the driver side of the column with a box end wrench.

I put a small amount of butyl on the wrench to hold the screw head from falling out of the wrench while you get it up into position.

Good Luck, it will go in, just not very quick.

I just took my dash and bezel out last weekend . I unscrewed that hex head from underneath. Although I have my column out.

I did take care of this last weekend.
The screw has a 3/8" head as shown. Not surprising, I had one in my bin of fasteners that are from cars I stripped 20 years ago.
On my car, someone had removed it, so the bracket was only making intermittent ground. To access it, I didn't have to drop the column, but just had to undo the lower column support. from the column and the supporting rods etc. The hole that the screw goes through was then visible. I used a 1/4" ratchet.

Good for you Andre!

1967 GTO & Lemans Gauges, the rear bracket

Here is a close-up of the slot that the rear tang of the bracket rests on top of.

In my experience the best way to access the screw-bolt is to lower the steering column.

Just as a side note in case anybody has a '66 GTO or Lemans they are working on.

1966 Pontiac A body cars used a similar bracket on the back of the gauge housing to the top of the pedal support however, both the bracket and the pedal support are 1966 only and those 2 items are NOT interchangeable with '67.

(1964 and 1965 GTO, Lemans and Tempest do not have a gauge housing support bracket in this location.)
