Taylor Wire Repair Advice
Friends,
I pulled the connector out of my Taylor 8.2 Thunderbolt boot. Any easy way to repair this? I cannot get the boot to slide. Thanks, Rick |
Connectors can be bought at Napa. I buy them by the box. You'll need a plug wire crimping tool, about $50 for a nice one.
From there it's just as simple as spraying a little silicone on the wire to slide the boot back and crimp a new terminal on the wire. |
Wd40 works as well. Just need some lube twist and push...

Add Dawn dish soap to the mix and voila, it works great! The original connector was in good shape, just re-spread it and crimped it back on the metal clip on the wire that was in place. already. Fired right up! Thanks all for the quick and sage replies, they are always appreciated! Rick

I have this Summit brand one and it’s been great - have done several sets with it. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-900399

The repair can be done with a pair of needle nose pliers, if you’ve just pulled it apart. Unfold the crimp enough to slip the wire/core back in and then press the ends back to where they were.

I bought the generic Summit or Jegs (I can’t remember which) and was very happy with it. I think it was about $35.
I had always been intimidated by making your own wires. Now I can’t stand out of the box row cut wires. |

I have a crimper similar to what 68 GTO posted.
I'm trying to remember the brand I have, either MSD or one of the other names. It's a ratcheting style and you can replace the jaws to crimp different size plug wires as well as other types of wiring that requires special crimps. It will also cut the wires and also strip them perfectly. I paid like $50 for it probably 25-30 years ago. One of the best tools in the box. They also sell small fixtures to crimp plug wires that go in your vice. Need to have the plug wire off the car though to use those. |
