Giving credit where it’s due.

I just want to give a public shout out to Scott Brown at https://www.buyracingparts.com. A while back, I had a balancer break on my mild 400 in my LeMans. It bent the crank and cracked the block, but I had an extra 400 N crank and 30 over 400 block. The motor had a .255/.262 solid cam in it that had been recommended by one of the big Pontiac shops. It made 523 hp at 5800 and 503 ft at 4900. The cam was damaged, so I reached out to Scott to get his recommendation on making the switch to a hyd roller. Due to the stock rods/heavy pistons in a 557 block, rpms was the major limiting factor. He chose a cam, we got it put together and dyno’d yesterday. The only other change was going to total seal gapless 2nd rings.z, same dyno, headers jets ect. Happy to say hp jumped from 523 to 569@5800 and torque from 503@4900 to 558@4700. The Edelbrock heads and intake are too big for this motor but they are what I have, and they really want more air. We quit pulling at 5800 and it jumped 10 full hp from 5700-5800. I’d love to be able to spin it to 6500 just to see, but normal usage will be below 5500. I’m pleasantly surprised, and extremely happy with my experience with Scott, I highly recommend him.

Adam,
That looks like a really nice increase. Do you have a dyno sheet you can post?

Good job! Scott is good people.

Nice increase. ! Good to hear about a quality source for parts. I'll remember his name.

Very nice results. :)

Any port work on Eheads?

dragracerx2813 07-10-2021 06:22 PM

Very nice.

chiefbigb 07-10-2021 10:17 PM

Never heard of him. Lol

steve25 07-11-2021 06:31 AM

Good to hear!
It’s good that it pulls hard to 5800 as from 5000 to 6200 is right where a 3.750” stroke street / strip motor does its best work.

Nice numbers. What brand balancer did you have that broke? Thanks

OCMDGTO 07-11-2021 11:43 AM

Nice build, any more details? Curious to hear how it does in that 557 block

Dragncar 07-11-2021 04:20 PM

That,s a nice increase. Dealing with Scott is a win-win.
557 block, my buddy did rip all his mains out on one. About the same HP level with iron heads. heavy rods and TRW pistons. But it did take 3-4 years of 11 flat bracket racing to do it.

I do have dyno sheets, I will get them posted up. He eheads are first gens that I got back in like 2014 from Mike Leech. They are std port, with 2.12/1.65 valves. I’ll post the glue sheet when I post the dyno sheet. The balancer that broke was a stock one that was apart of the 69 400 shortblock that I was running.. my own fault for using it, it was always one of those “ I’ll do it next time things”., well I finally did.

Chris D
30 over 557
1970 N crank
Stock rods, speed pro flat tops with arp hardware
248/255 hydraulic roller
340 Edelbrock heads
Edelbrock victor intake
750 ken jones carburetor
1” open spacer
1-7/8 - 3” A-body headers
It was happiest with timing at 35*

As far as the 557 goes, when the 69 block cracked, I had the the rods and pistons, and at the time I had saved up money for an aluminum block, and I was thinking, “ I’ll find a block cheap that will work with my old stuff, I had a spare 1970 N crank that just needed turned, I’ll reuse everything, throw bearings in it and I’ll have a spare shortblock laying around that could get me by in a pinch for $1000-$1200 and I’ll have to wait on the aluminum block and extra couple months, no big deal. That was stupid of me because I know damn well nothing goes as planned., and it started to snowball. I should’ve just walked away, been out a grand and started over but I kept telling myself, well, it’ll be fine now and then the next issue would pop up. Before I knew it I was too much $$$ in it to not see it through and by the time it all got wrapped up, there is no aluminum block money. So I’m going to have to live with it, and keep my fingers crossed. I have a 40 over 70 block that needs everything including caps. I’m going to start saving up to get that built up and hopefully put the #62 heads and the RA IV cam in the 557 motor hopefully to use in a cruiser with a clutch pedal some day. We shall see.

Thanks for the dyno sheet.

Thank you, it’s perfect for what i do with it. It’s a street car that I bracket/index race. No cage or roll bar, so I’m limited to 7.35/11.50. The car ran a best of 7.27 before with a 4.30 gear, we switched to a 3.70 a few weeks before the balancer broke so we could go comfortably run 1/4 mile stuff also. I was hoping the new cam would help pick up what we lost in et with the gear swap so I could stay on the quick side of a lot of the stuff I try to run with it

blueghoast 07-14-2021 02:55 PM

Yeah I went to a 3:42:1 gear with my motor to see how that'll
work, I've still got to get to the track see if the converter. will do
the job. I hope it'll lock up on the tall end .
