Weight of a 66 GTO

Hi.

I am getting new rear springs made for my GTO & the spring shop wants to know the approximate rear end weight of my GTO.

I have seen weights of 34XX up to 37XX lbs listed for 66 GTOs'.
Does anybody have:

[1] An accurate weight figure
[2] The front/rear weight bias. Some magazine road tests published this ratio.

My car is a hardtop, 455 engine with factory heads, non-AC, power brakes, power steering, bucket seats, elec windows.
TIA.

Do you Aussies have truck stops with scales? Due to so many variables in vehicles, especially one that is not assembly line stock, any factory specs or someone elses car will be a crap shoot at best. Remember, close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.

If you have them, go to a local truck stop and drive on their scale. Other places that have scales are scrap yards and stone quarries. Your only other shot is to find a racer in your area with a set of scales and weigh it yourself.

Also keep in mind that large scales, as in the ones found at truck stops, will only tell you total weight. To find out bias you will need to find a racer or someone with a set of scales that go under each individual tire. That is the only proper way to obtain bias percentages that I am aware of.

I was hoping someone might have an old road test that show the weight & F/R bias. I have road tests of later GTOs that have this info, but not for the 66.

Geoff - Somoracz Racecars in Camden could scale the car for you.

I don't recommend using published numbers for determining which springs to install in your car, regardless of the source of the info. They always vary and are often questionable/not fully applicable. Just find a shop that can corner balance cars and have them weigh it. You'll get the front/rear bias that way, too.

There is your answer. Scaling a car takes about an hour or less and does not cost a lot. The plus side is, the guy that scales it could recommend what is best for your car. No second guessing and having a pile of springs kicking around the garage you cannot use.

I can't find it now but I read that the weight bias was 56/44 front to back on a stock 66GTO hardtop.

Had my 67 GTO on the scales ..3900 lbs......has AC ..power windows,,ps,pb, turbo 400 ...which all add weight

fyr,
I have a road test for a 68 GTO hardtop, weight bias is listed as 57.3/42.7.
Given the longer rear overhang of the 66, your number sounds about right.

With what equipment? A/C???? Power windows???? Tri-Power????? Stick???? Automatic????? All of the above????? It all changes weight and bias.

Yes they do. That is why you cannot go off of someone elses numbers.

Went through some of my old magazines & found a road test of a 67 Tempest Sprint, with the OHC six engine. Power accessories, but non A/C. Weight bias was 55/45.
