70 hood light
 

does anyone have a picture of the location and wiring of the hood light.

mine has a orange wire and a ground lead. looking for the route of wires

I have never seen one of these installed on a '70 Firebird;
I suspect it's the same as what the A-body's received.

If I recall correctly, there are some pictures of how it was to be installed in the 1970 Firebird supplement (service manual).

This is from 72, Formula hood on the right, other on the left. I have researched this some, and the under hood light seems to be a rare option.

Interesting.
Is it called out on the invoice? Or was it an accessory installed at the dealer?
I'm not sure I've ever seen one with a factory installed hood lamp.

I'm following. sounds like a nice feature to add. There must be a hood button to add some where too. Please share pics to get an idea.

No hood button. They were a mercury switch design like the 'F' body trunk lights.

car has light package . the hood light is factory installed.
notice the short ground led . there were no modifications' to led.

the power led has been spliced. the ground cable at light is factory attached to housing

I don't know where the ground goes . There are no holes to screw it to cowl and its to short to reach if there were . ????

The ground would have been used for the formula hood (plastic). The metal hood would not need the ground wire. The drawing I posted seems to indicate that there was two harnesses used, one for steel hoods, and one for plastic hoods. The plastic hood harness has the ground wire, and the drawing shows a dimple where it would be screwed into the firewall. Also, the few other pictures of the lamp I have seen only have one screw to mount it, not two. There was a NOS one on ebay some time ago that had the one hole and it was listed for a huge amount of money. Not saying yours isn't original. The one hole mounting would be needed for the formula hood as it has a boss molded into the fiberglass that is for one screw.
My best guess is the the ground was never connected on your install because it was not needed to make the lamp work. Why drill a hole in the firewall when you do not have to.

Mike your probably right . I took the car apart years ago and didn't take pics . Im sure the light is O.E. to car . the orange wire was cut and spliced with wire end shown . The ground wire is to short to mount to FW . was there a different hinge on glass hood cars the ground mounted to ?

the wires as shown work this way . there are no signs that the ground wire was used . teeth look unused . and there are no signs the wire was bolted.

I'm thinking the ground was taped into the shrouding.

The formula got the same hinges and springs as the other Firebirds, but taking a look at those pictures I can only assume if this was installed on a formula you would attach that ground end to the hinge somehow. The hinge is the only thing that has ground on the plastic hood when it is open. That ground looks just long enough to make to the hinge. Interesting.
That is a nicely optioned TA by the way.

It is . That is what I wanted when shopping . But it didn't have oe motor and a few other things to make it not a original style restoration .That opened the door to do a resto. mod performance build . With performance changes only . So getting a little picky on O.E. details .

Wow, that sure is very highly optioned for a '70 T/A. Looks like you're doing a great job on the restoration!
