I just got documentation from phs. On the manifest box 64 has a 4 in it and the production instructions box has SR PN 908 909 in it. Does anyone know what these mean? Thanks for any info.

The numbers 908 and 909 are the last 3 numbers of the part numbers of the front - 3186908 and rear - 3186909, standard shocks.

The 4 in box 64 would indicate an option code of 644. I can't find any "64" in 64. The closest I found is 641 for a 65 GTO - Rally Wheels. The PHS should have a breakdown sheet highlighted with the options on the build sheet.

In '65 Rally Wheels is option 691.
The 644 code for '64 does not show up on any of my reference material. It does show up in '65 as the code for a Heavy Duty Fan. It may be that in '64 the H.D. Fan was included with the 389 for the GTO, but was not an R.P.O.??? However, none of the other '64 GTO manifests that I have on hand show 644 w/382.

Where was your car built? My car was built in Kansas City which actually used Chevy build sheets.

Thanks for all the info guys, Tri power , 4 speed m21 w/3.90, nocturne blue, dark blue interior, built in pontiac, it is a pontiac build sheet, The sheet goes from 632 to 671, so I don't have a clue what the 644 is. I heard from someone that a dark blue interior was rare. Thanks again for the info.

I could not even find a listing in my Kansas City Build sheet for the 644 code. It stops at 633.

Do we have any "Zone" or "Pontiac Motors" cars
out there with a XX-991, XX-992, XX-999, etc
code out there besides mine? (12-992).

Option 644 in 1964 is a Tempest/LeMans (not GTO) option for a 326 heavy duty fan. The UPC for this option is K01. This information from 1964 Pontiac Tempest Inspector's Guide, second printing, 19 December 1963

Jon,

I have the same printing of the guide.

What page are you looking at and where on the page?

Edited!
Sorry! I found the location. I agree.

Was the heavy duty fan a component of the GTO 389 engine package? If so, the 644 entry on spi7's Billing Card may have simply been a mis-entry on PMD's part.

The SR and PN letters are the front and rear (respectively) coil spring tag codes. See photo, green is front, orange is rear.

Thank for all the info guys, maybe the 644 was just a mistake? thanks

1964 644 code

This is an old thread but here is another '64 GTO with a "4" in box "64". The car is a tri power, close ratio 4-speed, 3.90 rear, metallic brakes, and HD radiator.

I "suspect" the 644 may be HD Fan?? Manifest photo available if needed.

Thx!

Well this thread is old enough to vote now so there’s that. ;)

Sales Code 644 was indeed the code for the HD Fan in ‘64.

The ‘64 Tempest Inspector’s Guide did indeed note the HD Fan as associated with the 326 as Jon Hardgrove mentioned way back when.

But that was not accurate, ie., the factory issued Guide was wrong.

All ‘64 V8 Tempests got the HD Fan automatically when AC was optioned. Since it was part of the AC option “package”, the 644 was NOT coded on these builds, no additional extra cost on the Window Sticker.

However, the 644 WAS coded whenever any V8 Tempest (including GTO) was optioned with the 3.90 axle. The HD Fan was a MANDATORY extra cost option when this axle was chosen. In a GTO, the 3.90 could ONLY be had with the metallic brake option and Safe-T-Track which were also mandatory extra cost options. I won’t get into the Radiator as it was bit complicated in ‘64 for the GTO because of running changes.

The 3.90 axle could be ordered in any ‘64 GTO, regardless of carb.

I have copies of several ‘64 GTOs that were built with the 3.90 axle, all of them show the 644 code (Pontiac Plant records, Fremont, KC, and Balt ‘64 GTOs also got the HD Fan with 3.90 axle but the coding on these records was different).
