1970 drivers side door jamb/door catch

I thought my original door jamb had enough to salvage this original section for the (more or less) square indentation specific to 1970/1971 original quarters.

Well investigation from last night tells me I in fact do not.

This is an already hosted image of the correct indentation on at the passenger side:

I will check with a local but does anyone have (a section of) this area that they would be willing to sell me?

To clarify;
Does anyone have (a section of) this area on a drivers side door jamb that they would be willing to sell me?

What is the build date on your trim tag? I’m trying to narrow down when the switchover to the Nevada shape occurred. My 70 was built 05A and has the square on both sides.

the switch over was during the 1971 model year;
Early cars had the "square", late cars had the "kidney".

What may have confused some is the GM replacement quarters were the "current" version - they didn't care about little details like this.
My car had replacement GM quarters hung on it some time before late 1985;
The entire door jamb area was left on the replacement passenger side quarter, while the drivers side door jamb was left (the quarter was brazed on just inside the lip into the jamb).

Because I haven't heard from anyone, I assumed that I was more or less going to have to recreate the correct indentation - I may salvage a section of my original drivers side door jamb for this;
That section isn't as bad as I previously thought - it was just mostly covered up.
But a replacement solid jamb would be much more desirable to me.

Thanks. Good information!

Jonny, The switch has been nailed down to late June early July of the 70 model year with one report of a March car. What is the source of your information? Using the search function I found an old thread on this subject that you even posted in. 🤔 I might be able to help you do you have a US shipping address? https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...ghlight=Indent

The switch was not during the 1971 model year !where do you get your information from? late June early July 1970

Attached is a photo of the door jambs on my 1970 Formula. It had the later style quarter panels, and I know they were original.

I bought it in 1982 from the origina woman owner. It was a very plain jane car, with manual disc brakes, no a/c, and an AM radio. I think it only had four options, tinted windows, AM radio, power steering, and console.

Thanks. That’s more in line with when I thought the switch occurred.

Thanks for the correction.

I had been keeping track of details like this one from here and the CP message board before I frequented here;
As you may have noticed, to my own detriment (because it seems you have been correcting me a fair amount lately) I don't necessarily reference my own notes but instead rely on recollections when replying off the cuff to posts like the one 'Bird collector' made.

I could have sworn that in the past there had been mention of some early 1971 cars that had these, but I digress, that my 'angle' of recollection was based on what was correct too my (06A) car - with the model year change over happening not too long after my car was built.
From my experience, our search function doesn't always work that well. There have been examples this past year where I am searching for a thread to re-read a post that I am certain of having read, and I am finding that I have to be quite persistent because it can take hours (or days) to find it.

I'd have a hard time being convinced of that March example being original - This would have been a scant two months after initial production started - with thousands of cars being built with the early door jambs afterwards.

But none of that matters, because this is a "parts wanted" thread, and seeing as my car was built before the changeover, I am still hoping to find a complete door jamb, rather than have to splice in my salvaged section.

As to the shipping comment, I do have state-side family that can accept parts for me;
I have a second cousin in Oregon who has about two years' worth of parts awaiting to be picked up... as you might be able to imagine, I am itching to drive down and get them - and when the border was closed about a year and a half ago, I made a point of trying to send everything to myself (I'd estimate that 80% of the stuff at his place was ordered before the border closure).
I have found that more often than not if something is being mailed from the midwest, shipping to Oregon versus shipping to Alberta is a near indiscernible difference - especially if USPS is used.

Will ck a few '70 F-body field cars when I'm on the road. Have cut solid "70 style" door jambs out before. Have a '70 non AC stick roller in back of my building but too nice to cut up.

On yard cars, the rear 1/4 needs to be heavily damaged in the far rear or top, & the body shell needs to have other issues that make it something that is not going to be sold as a "builder".

unruhjonny 09-08-2021 02:45 PM

wow - great!

I appreciate your willingness to look into this for me :D

lfdsteve 09-08-2021 04:22 PM

I cut that section out of my 71, clamped a piece of new sheet metal over the original hit it with a torch until it was cherry red and worked it into shape with a body hammer and pick using the old piece as a form.
Never done an iota of body work and it came out perfect. Not kidding.
Watch that Hotrod cd series where they build the 70 Chevelle. He has a whole section on duplication of non reproduced parts. It really wasn’t that difficult.
Fwiw

I never thought of trying it that way - thanks for the suggestion;
I had just figured since I was going to replace this section already, I might as well at least try to get he correct formed one to begin with.

Norwood 09-08-2021 10:01 PM

Both sides or just one ?

I just need the drivers side one;
I have a complete used passenger side quarter panel (with a cut inner wheel well) which has the correct door jamb area.

For those taking notes;
My car had GM replacement quarters hung on it prior to 1986;
The drivers side was cut, and lipped over onto the door jam - it was brazed in place.
The passenger side had the door jamb from the replacement quarter installed.
This is why I have mentioned having the one on the drivers side, but not the passenger - while only hoping to find the drivers side.

I recently pulled off the drivers side quarter, and wasn't too surprised to find this:

Your welcome. If you end up stuck give it a try. It honestly was amazingly simple once I watched that video.
Good luck!

i gave Norwood a set of these that I removed from a car I scrapped. He might still have them. I have another set but I'm not parting with them just yet.
