How to route positive battery cable to starter?
 

I've got my new 461 in the 66 Tempest, headers on. Went to install the starter last night and it's a very tight fit but it's in there. Since this is my first Pontiac motor, how do you route the positive battery cable up into the front of the starter? Does it clip to the crossmember? Obviously I don't want it to be too near the headers and a ground!

I will be installing the battery in the trunk so I can have the cable come through the firewall/floor wherever makes sense. I can't imagine how I'd do it with a normal battery tray.

The (+ ) batt cable usually runs along the oil pan and then up the front of the engine to the battery. There were a couple different brackets/tubes the factory used. The (-) cable attaches to a head bolt stud, or another threaded hole in the drivers side cylinder head. I'm unsure how this would work with a batt in the trunk.

Ah, along the oil pan rail, where it mates to the block? Are there clips or something? I was thinking I'd drill and tap my crossmember to put a little wire/hose clamp in there but that sounded crazy.

You need part # N179EK(battery cable heat shield $34). This is bolted to the driver side motor mount. You have to drill and tap the mount. You will also have to bend the battery cable where it comes off the starter(90*) for max clearance. In order to install it you will need to drop the starter and attach the cable after first running it through the tube that is attached to the motor mount.

Appears to be that way doesn't it.
Is this a fresh build with the engine/flywheel/starter/bellhousing?

I got away from the stock tube thru the exhaust manifold on my 64 GTO and went to the 67+ style, (go under the manifold/ (headers in my case), along side the block and then down to the starter.

Oh man, you guys had me freaking out. I really don't want to yank that motor again. I watched a Ram clutch install video and the flywheel teeth are on the motor side, not the clutch side. I pushed the starter gear out and it seems centered on the flywheel teeth. I think I'm good, right?

Picture is worth 1000 words. Yep, you have it on correctly.
Sometimes a picture can be deceptive. Why made the flywheel?
Looks like a nice one. One nice thing about a stock Bellhousing, you can see the flywheel/clutch parts from the bottom of
the bellhousing if the metal shield is not installed..

I know, I know. BUT I do this on all my older cars to get a way to remote crank my engine AND get that live battery cable away from all the hot things.
