MSD Digital 6+ vs Digital 6AL ??
What's the basic difference between these two boxes? I was planning on using the 6AL, but have a chance to pickup the 6+ new, cheap from a friend. |
If i were you I would look for the 6al2, you get 2 rev limiters, a launch and a maximum, not much difference in money. I do not like the digital al boxes from some info I read on line, and a friend of mine being stranded on the hwy. They seem to stop working for no good reason. My 6 al2 box is 10 years strong no issues.

I had the 6AL-2 in my Falcon. It died in less than a year, and they sent me another. The car was down for awhile, and the second one lasted maybe 2 years, before it died and left me stranded on the way to a race.
Pulled a 20+ year old analog 6AL out of my parts bin, installed THAT, and never had another problem. IMHO, their quality dropped a LOT after AutoTronics sold them. |

I have 2 of the Digital Boxes: MSD Ignition 6520 - MSD Digital-6 Plus CD Ignitions Mine are about 15-20 years old, Never installed. Busy with other things in life. Any one running one of the OLDER 6520 boxes? I also have a MSD 7 AL box (like new) that was on Marty Palbykin's 6 second prior to him going to a MAGNETO set-up. Any Interest. PM me as not going to post them as For Sale. Tom V. |
The asphalt Late Model car I picked up (backed int the wall) has TWO MSD systems they could switch during a race if one crapped out and they are analog.
I have known drag racers even with the old analogs have them crap out at the track and many carried spares. |
Agree totally Skip with that deal. Everyone (including the F-Guys) ran two systems BUT with the "potted" units, very rarely (unless
the car was crashed), was the 2nd unit ever needed. Autotronics built some nice stuff for the F-Guys but we paid more for it. The Teams always played it safe, even with the better design and the potted parts. In the old days, only a few had complete ignition control. Today everyone is using the add on systems to get consistent performance pass after pass. Tom V. There are a few systems out there with F-1 capabilities. MoteC being one of them. Not Cheap. https://www.motec.com.au/s-em-hundre...s-howtochoose/ Nothing WRONG with a good "Old School Digital System" |
Heck I thought I was hot stuff in 1971 running a "Judson Magneto" CDI coil on my 409 Impala to keep from fouling plugs!

Thanks for the feedback. I plan to mainly use this on the street. It may see the track a few times on fun days. But not on a regular basis. Just wanted to see if this was a good box to run since I can get it for only $100 new in box.

I run a Digital 6, 10 years w/o issues. I like the start retard and two rev limiters.
|
i have a couple of digital 6al2 boxes on street vehicles, no problems. but i have ready to run distributors in both and could easily rewire to use the internal module if the box failed.
