No more 10w-40
I was at my local O'Reilly's looking for a couple of quarts of 10w-40 Valvoline. There was none. I was talking to the assistant manager and he said that there was not going to be any more made by any manufacturers. He also said the 15-40 Rotella was getting hard to get. He also told me that conventional motor oil was going to slowly be phased out.
Has anyone else been having trouble getting oil in your location? |
yep, local walmart had none, zero, zip, nada conventional oil on the shelf the other day. Not even house brand super-tech.
Replaced by some kinda synthetic "blend" whatever that is. |

I was at Walmart this morning they had rotella 15-40 I didn’t get any I just did a oil change yesterday. I didn’t look for 10-40 so not sure on that. They didn’t have any atf-4 on the shelf. I think they are all having problems with inventory.

I had basically the same experience recently. But I was looking for conventional 10w-30. Castrol GTX was it, and only in the 5 quart jugs, no single quarts. Plenty of Rotella though, and other 15w-40 diesel oils. Most of the automotive oils were synthetic, or synthetic blend. Not sure if this is a trend, or just the supply chain stuff that's prevalent in lots of products right now.

I am good. I still have 160 quarts of the 15w40 High Zinc 1400ppm oil I bought years ago.

I usually buy my Mobil 1 10W-30 at Costco when it's on sale. No more. No 10-30. They have 0-20, 5-20, 5-30. Costco obviously caters to the majority of users. used to use 10-30 on everything, now i need to stock 3 grades with my newer vehicles.

Bought 10w40 pennzoil at Homedepot a month ago. At Wally world yesterday for Mobil 1 for truck no 10w30 or 40 pennzoil.

I can still get VR-1 and going to start running that in my Grand Prix. Been using VR-1 Valvoline in the GTO for over 30 years. I have only been able to find Rotella at my local Wal-Mart once in the last six weeks. It's over $5 a gallon cheaper there than anyplace else.
The guy that built the V-10 Dodge for me last year specifically said no synthetic oil is too used. I don't have any idea what to do except start buying all the Valvoline Racing oil I can lay my hands on so I'll have oil for my Pontiac engines. |
10W-40 has been in a slow discontinue cycle for several years now. Non-synthetic oil has as well to a lesser degree. Other than raw price point, their is little reason to run a non-synthetic engine oil, with these few exceptions:
1. New engine break-in especially with cheap iron piston rings, and a lousy hone job. (backyard ball hone) Non-synthetic would help bed-in the rings. 2. Flat tappet camshaft break-in. (would need break-in specific oil or an additive for best results) Other than that, I really can't think of a reason someone would "seek out" non-synthetic oil, other than cost of course. If just the viscosity is a concern and you want 10W-40, 5W-40 and 5W-50 is readily available in synthetic as well as 5W-50 for very wide viscosity coverage. |

I can kinda see 10-40 disappearing since it's mostly used it as a slightly thicker oil to prevent leaks or burning oil due to worn valve seals or rings for engines that originally called for 10-30. What is the last manufacture that specifically called for 10-40 oil, anyway? Was the ever one?
I don't see 15-40 going anywhere since a lot of diesels use it. Yeah, I know there's a lot of synthetic replacements like 5-40w but that's just asking for trouble on older and higher mileage engines. |
We still stock plenty of the conventional 10w-30 and 10w-40. The 5w30 and 5w20 are all going to synthetic blend. The Rotella 15w40 was in short supply, but that seems to be over. We still sell plenty of the VR1 and the Lucas oils. Rotella 10w-30 is in short supply right now.
