Axle Bearings

What type of axle bearings are these? They are from a 1976 Grand Prix 10 bolt 8.5" bolt in axles. The code stamped on the axle tube is AA O which should be Olds rear with 2.41 ratio. The rear is original to the car and this is the first time it's been opened. I was expecting to see a Set 9 type bearing, seal and inner retainer ring but these are tapered bearings with race set in the axle tube. The inner retainer ring is almost the same diameter as the race, one of them must have caught the lip of the race and pulled it part way out when I removed the axle.

Did the bearing come apart and the outer races stuck in the axle tube? The original inner retainer ring doesn't look like the one here: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/t...iABEgLsu_D_BwE

That interesting. No idea what that bearing is.

This is what I used on my GP.

The pictured bearing is a set 9 factory type bearing which is a tapered roller , the race has pulled apart and is still in the axle tube most likely from the retainer as you mentioned. The bearing retainer is also the original. When I pulled the axles from the 71 Skylark 8.5" that I bought for my LeMans They looked the same.

Ran into those tapered rollers in my late teens. Probably a 1970 GTO. Better for Handling and maybe 1/4 mile durability

But was a mystery to me for rebuilding or swapping into roller bearing housings. Dang Driver axle roller bearing would crunch after 1/4 mile use and TH400 chirps.

I knocked the race out and it is labelled Timken u261L which is same as Set9 and A9 I believe. So I know what I need to order now, at first I thought they were different type bearings. Thanks for your input.

Very common with that style A9 axle bearing. Have to be very careful pressing them on the axles.
