Oil question

What are you guys using in your race engines?
Brad Penn or VR1?

chuckies76ta 03-04-2024 07:08 PM

Oh Boy. I run 20W50 Amsoil in our race engine. And the reason for the heavy oil is bearing and rod clearances. Solid roller.

Johnny406 03-04-2024 07:31 PM

I've been running the VR-1 20/50 for years. Like Chuckie, my clearances are on the looser side.

gman005 03-04-2024 08:06 PM

I have been using Brad Penn 20w-50 for years. My engine builder wants me to use VR1. So has Brad Penn changed the formula? I know VR1 is less money but I just want to know what everyone is using.

I run Penn 10-40

mysticmissle 03-04-2024 08:44 PM

I’ve run the vr1 20/50 but lately Mobil one 10/40 might go to vr1 10/30 at some
Point

blueghoast 03-04-2024 11:15 PM

20-50 VR1 for me I heard brad penn took out the good stuff like zinc ddp
and all the break in additives that used to be in it.
Check to be sure for your own results.

Shaffers, been saying it for awhile. The Best.
This guy did back to back dyno test on a 400ish LS engine on a chassis dyno.
Pretty significant numbers for just oil.

I like Motuls ester oil
i run 20-60, which can now only find 10-60
i live in high temps
oddly the 20-60 sounds so thin too

bluegoat65 03-05-2024 09:00 AM

10w/30 Lucas race only. I run Bullet .384 lobe, solid flat tappet with 1.8 Ford rockers. 2 on the rods and 2.5 on the mains.

Elarson 03-05-2024 10:03 AM

Grocery Getter and my new road race engine both use VR-1, 10w-30.

My engine builder recommended Brad Penn 10-40.

The oil analysis’s come back the pretty much the same.

VR1 10W30.. But I'm not as fast as some of you guys.

sdbob 03-05-2024 06:05 PM

I dont know. I've been running 10-40 Pennzoil in my street SD and the stocker SD I race, Forever.

Scott Stoneburg 03-05-2024 09:31 PM

I need to edit. I'm using 10-30. I was using 10-40 Royal Purple. But when I had my motor on the Dyno, the operator was uncomfortable with how high the oil pressure was with the RP 10-40. We switched to Penn 10-30 and it lowered the oil pressure by quite a bit at high rpm. Idle pressure held the same. I will try to find the info to put real numbers to it

Found it ...dropped about 38psi @ 5000-6000 rpms

Picking up my new shortblock from machine shop tomorrow. He suggested BradPenn. I'll ask the weight.

VR1 Synthetic 10-30/20-50 depending on bearing clearance

65madgoat 03-06-2024 11:22 AM

Driven 15W-40 for me

Mr Anonymous 03-06-2024 12:12 PM

VR-1 20w/50 on engines with throw-at-cat-thru-it bearing clearances, and their 10w-30 on stuff thats likely to survive.
