59 Pontiac Mickey Thompson + GM Dept X Aluminum Heads

I came across these interesting experimental aluminum heads on my local Craigslist this morning and thought you all might be interested in at least seeing them. Sounds like they have a pretty interesting history!

Built in 1959, Developmental aluminum heads built by Mickey Thompson and GM. Originally built for the Challenger that broke the worlds speed record, one way on Bonneville Salt Flats, in 1959. These heads are ported to the max, intake valves were ground into the aluminum, when I got them. Had seats installed, and bronze guides, was going to do stainless valves, but didn't get that far. Heads were also CC'd. Had Hilborn fuel injection on top of these heads on a blown up Pontiac motor in California desert, some of Mickey Thompson's old friends.

This Hilborn fuel injection comes with these developmental aluminum heads, it is 1965 Hilborn. I called Hilborn, sent me a copy of the order sheet. Jack Merkel automotive of New York ordered it in 65 for a giant Pontiac motor, for a client. Merkel was a world title holder with his Hemi Willys. Heads can be purchased separately for $10,000. Dang that is a thin center wall divider on those ports!

this would be awesome on alky injected in a 57 Poncho gasser using a 59 389 block and a 4.5" stroker crank !

Are those only 3/8” rocker studs?

3/8 WOULD BE BOTTLE NECK STUDS.

Those look like my 7/16 straight studs I had put into my 64 GTO heads many years ago.
Looks like they were drilled but no oil feed passage under the studs to feed the studs and then the rockers & balls. For sure, pushrod oiling.

There was already a thread on this heads on this site,non performance small valve heads.There were actually quite a few of them made,I have owned a few sets over the years.WAY over priced for the heads IMO.Tom

Why is the restamping below the cast in numbers a lower number?

Steve,as I recall that is the developmental number.If you look close on the valve cover rails the cc for each chamber was stamped on it as well as the D number.One set I owned came on a complete alu engine(less rotating assm).Mine was unique as the block had a 61-64 bell pattern and every other one I owned and have seen had 55-60.thad a flat 4 bbl intake and a alu timing cover.It was stamped as a 370 but had 3in mains.Was designed to run without sleeves.I found it at M/Ts back in 1964,took me a lot of years to get my hands on it.Put 60 over 350 size sleeves in it.It is running around in a 62 bubble top catalina last I knew.Tom

Looking at the intake face of the heads, there are 3 large holes where the exhaust crossover would be. I get that the larger centered hole is the crossover, what do you think the other holes are there for?

Those 7/16 Studs have a drill-hole in the side for...oiling.

Might be an oval hole entrance for block-head oil flow-up. NO provision for oill drainback except the pushrod holes huh.
