What if ? 76-77 Grand Am

What do you guys think a 76-77 Grand Am should have looked like? Do you think it would have had 4 rectangular headlights like the Can Am or 2 larger square ones ? Like the 78 lemans. A Shaker scoop or the NACA scoops? Rear spoiler ?

This car designer, Geza Loczi, drew some 73 gto/grand am concepts back in the day that would have been interesting:

The large square headlamps were introduced on the mid year 1977 Pontiac Phoenix, so most likely if the Grand Am was released as a 1976 model, it would have had the quad rectangular lamps as the 1976 LeMans/GP.

I think what gto4door posted would be pretty close to what would have been produced style wise at least. I would change the rear 1/4 glass to the smaller Opera style windows or the smaller louvered windows the 77 C/A's have.
Remember they would have used all the 76/77 sheet metal changes and just replaced the nose (or not) grills and tail lights to make them more distinctive than a Lemans, or Grand Lemans.

73 for me 03-02-2017 07:23 PM

Good question. I would say recangular headlights, but the larger single lamp units. As for the scoop, I would say shaker if it had one since the Cam Am was already going to be done that way. Also, I would think the rear spoiler would be a part of package too. I keep going back to the All American Grand Am prototype just updated to later 70's styling. This would have been for the Coupe. The GA sedan would not have either the shaker or rear spoiler if that bodystyle were still offered.

That one's a little too Riviera esque for my taste. Maybe if they did the cornering lamps with a verticle pattern to break it up.

The one The Boss posted looks too much like a first generation Toronado.

The Grand Am was meant to be the postponed '72 GTO, with new Colonnade body shell. The 90 day UAW strike forced the change to '73 model year.
With insurance companies charging higher for 'super cars' [muscle cars], GTO became option on LeMans with chrome bumpers, and plastic front end made into Grand Am, instead.

Imagine a '72 colonnade body GTO, with no 5 mph bumpers and the 455 HO motor, but with the Grand Am nose?

chicagoland 10-24-2017 12:54 AM

The colonnade body shell was drawn up in 1968, and then prototypes built in 1970, during height of muscle car era. Strikes, inflation, emission controls, and insurance surcharges made the fastbacks afterthoughts and regulated to base models. GM promoted the Personal Lux notchbacks, for 73-77. But, at least kept some sporty option packages available.

Sketch by Gene Loczi in clay, but with a shaker....

goatless 10-24-2017 11:18 AM

Wow, the clay version looks very much like the '73 Grand Am nose except for the beak carrying down below the bumper.

Chief Wanabee 10-25-2017 03:56 PM

On that clay, if you were to lean the beak and the fender corners back about 25 degrees, you've have a Pontiac nose that's very similar to the '74-75 Lagoooona.. I kinda like it.

Anyone notice the grilles are very similar to 1974 T/A?
