Concourse Resto - Single Stage vs BC/CC

Concourse Resto - Single Stage vs BC/CC

'68 Firebird Starlight Black

I've seen both on high-end restorations. Either type doesn't seem to be a factor in points judging.

Thoughts?

For a concours restoration on a '68 bird I would think single stage. I dont think they used bc/cc that far back. Then again it should be lacquer to be correct I imagine. If it were my car I would go bc/cc. Most cars are over restored anyway.

I would think a bc/cc would closer resemble a lacquer job, but maybe that's just me. I've seen some OE paint jobs that were lacquer that were polished out that looked incredible. Not sure you could get a single stage to look that way/good.

We didn't start BC/CC until 1989 on GM Truck programs. We always followed passenger car by a year or two.

I don't see how BC/CC could be considered "concours correct".

On the other hand, I did BC/CC in the original color (Apple Red) when I redid my '87 pickup daily driver. I thought it would give it a bit more pop, and help with durability.

I loved it. It's been 10 years and I still think it was the right choice.

Black single stage looks better than basecoat clearcoat imho. Deeper and richer.

Southern Polyurethanes’s black is the best black I have seen.

Sikkens black looks pretty good too.

So, SPI single stage only comes in 3 colors?

Black, white and red if I remember right. What more do you need? :D

For a concourse correct restoration, would you not have to use the type, formulation and manufacturer (brand) of the paint used by the auto manufacturer.

I have forgotten how many black lacquer jobs I’ve done.......and that is the measuring stick, all other paint jobs try to achieve. So black Lacquer for me. The black BC/CC just looks too waxy for my liking. Use to spray 7 coats of black lacquer.....put it outside in the hot sun for a couple weeks...bring it in ,and block with 600 ( that was the finest paper, back then)....then spray another 5-6 coats of black...let gas out for a week...sand and buff.

I did a 1969 Camaro in Single Stage factory style for a Concourse judged event. The judges noticed and commented on how often they dock points for when they notice clear coat.

:first:

I don't like the deep clear look on a restored classic car. A high end custom car though... I want to look deep into that clear.

Got my Starlight Black GTO back from Hood Paint today; Single-Stage, cooked hood paint in booth.

Dupont Nason finishes.com is axalta.com in Glen Mills PA. Urethane 2k is Ful-thane Urethane, Old Starlight Black "A" is Black black with modern Chrysler code DX8

Shop charged me $560...dropped car off and 3days later im driving it today.

Looks quite good, which uploaded pictures cannot show. And of course the hood matches the rest of the (single-stage) car in color, gloss, and no orange peel. I asked to have the 14 year old decklid wet-sanded, and the shop said "bring it in Springtime and we'll also block the hood for free". Sounds fine by me.

Why don't I have luck or connections like that!?! Dang! That looks great!

Tell us more......was the hood removed ?...was it stripped to bare metal ? Was there any body work done on the Hood ? Did they spray and etch primer and then a 2k primer...or an epoxy and then 2k primer ? .....Or they just did a scuff and squirt ?

Joined a car club in JST PA, their go to paintshop guy refused to do single-stage. Dead-end.

Wife's car had a T-bone in Driver Rear Door, this insurance repair shop did the work..i get to talking about the hood & single-stage..estimator says "we'll do it". ( they are classic car guys).

i removed scoops & hoodpin stainless.
They removed Hood. i dunno how they surface-prepped the old primer ( they mentioned scuff, chemicals, blocksand). NO bodywork/putty ( good PY purchase huh). paint has a hardener to cure. Then it got ovened, reinstalled.

I asked for touchup jar but they said its complicated with needing the hardened.

We did my 78 in single stage black but clear single stage clear while still tacky. Glasurit catalyzed urethane. Enough clear coats to color sand.

At the time(late 80s) most of the Porsche and Mercedes were single stage Glasurit.

I like single stage for all solid colors. I think it looks more like a lacquer finish than bs/cc. I like to wet sand it before applying the last 2 coats.

Ive considered doing my palladium silver gto in single stage on the next refresh but havent been able to find much on shooting single stage metallics. The factory did it, so mustnt be too hard, right?
