Hood repair project

4 Attachment(s)
I thought I'd post a few pics of my last metal project on this car. The hood is quite nice on the top side and 90% of the bottom ... but looks like it was stood up nose down for years before I got it. So the bracing along the front on either side of the latch hole is pretty bad.

In this pic I've cut a piece of 22 ga the approximate right size with some to spare to cut off .. then Cleco clamped it to the rusted section ... used quite a few because I need it fastened well enough to bend over the top edge.

This photo shows the patch after the top edge was bent to match the original metal.

After the top was bent I cut the bottom off .. cutting through both the patch and the metal beneath.

This photos shows all the trimming done and with the cut-off lying there on top.

This photo shows the rusted piece being replaced ... still attached by a few stray threads.

Testing fitting the patch

Tacked in place with the left seam done and the Cleco holes welded up.

Bottom seam done all the way across. Still a lot of work to do, lot of pin holes to weld up, lots of other small sections to replace. Upper seam will be a bit more difficult because it's harder to reach with the various grinding tools. Good technique for doing any similar area like rockers etc. Used a Lincoln with .025 Harris wire, CO2/Argon mix. Was tempted to use TIG and silicon/bronze but too much contamination from dirty back side on the metal.

Almost done with this section. Had to order some different abrasives to finish it.
