70 gto rim/tire question

I have a 70 gto with 14x7 ralley 2 wheels at the moment. They havent made the 235 70- 14 i currently have for quite awhile. I might jump up to 15" for a better selection and some more tread width.Anybody have a car or know if 15x8 ralley 2 with 4.5 " backset coupled with 255/60-15 will fit on my car without and rubbing issues? My car is stock ride height with front disc brakes.Trying to stick with a close to stock height tire that came on the car. G70-14 which was about 26.8" tall. The 255 60 is 27.1 ,,,,a 245 60 is 26.6". Looks funny when people put too short of tires on these cars. I tried BFG 225 70 14 but looked short to me. 15x7 is also a possibility but i thought a 8" wide tire would look better on a 8" wide rim. No funny looking rolling of the tire side wall.

Going through the achives 255 60 15 up front can be hit or miss with rubbing,,even with 15x7 rim. 245 60 15 are ok. So maybe a 246 60-15 on a 15x7 ralley 2? Looks like 26.6" tall. Id like to be the same height of a g70-14.

I've run 245/60/15 on my 70 for years. No rubbing issues. If you haven't already find an online tire calculator, very helpful in figuring out tire sizes.

Agreed, I don't believe you can run a 255/60/15 on the front.

I'm running 245/60/15 on the front with no issues.

You could get a Wheel Vintiques Series 62 wheel and use stock hub caps. That wheel comes in 15x7 with a 4.25 back space. For a 15x8 you would need a 5" back space to not screw with scrub radius... The 255/60r15 tire would be a perfect fit. That was Herb Adams favorite go to wheel, the Chevrolet 15 x 8 Rally wheel but that wheel doesn't have enough back space for the GTO.. Call Summit and see if they can get Wheel Vintiques to make them for you or go on HAMB and find wheel Smith. He can make you anything.. Anytime I ever had custom wheels made by a small wheel company they always turned out perfect! Rally America, Jimmy was another good shop..

My plan is to go with the ralley 2 rim,,,either aftermarket or oem. I tried the firestone wide oval radials in g70-14 but the tread width is only 6" vs advertised 6.9" and 26.6" tall vs advertised 27". Just look too skinny on the car.Sent them back and Im abandoning 14" rims and going 15" for more of a height/width selection. So Im going either 15x7 or 15x8. And BFG T/a or like mickey thompson white lettered.Id like to stick with all 4 tires/rims the same size. So it sounds like maybe a 245/60-15 on 15x7 or 15x8,,,4"BS or 4.5" BS. I like the 27" tall 255 but it sounds like it might rub on the front. Some claim no rub on a 70 gto where some have with the 255. I think both 245 and 255 60's are like a 8" tread width. Traction with the 7" that are on it are bad enough,,,Wide ovals are 6",,dont need to try less of a tire width.. Pic is of the wide ovals i tried but sent them back.

are the measurements accurate thats listed? The ovals were listed as 27" but actual was 26.5" 245 /60 15 are listed as 26.6". Anybody run that tire that can measure the actual diameter of the 245 60?

My 245/60/15 Cooper on a 7” rim measures 26 3/8” unweighted.

scott70 08-13-2020 10:13 AM

Ok thanks,,,,interesting. Took my time last night and measured the over half worn 235 70 14 bfg and got 26 3/4". Measured the new wide oval and got 26.5". 245 60 15 are supposed to 26.6" on a 7.5" rim. Really would like to go with the 255 60 15 which would be a good height but at 8.2" tread width it really should be on a 8" rim. I think a 255 on a 15x8 rim would give me clearance problems on the front of my 70 gto.

scott70 08-13-2020 11:33 AM

Since the back really isnt a issue,,,would a 245 60 15 on a ralley 15x8 rim with a 4.5" backset rub anywheres on the front of my 70 GTO?

Im actually thinking now using a 15x8 rim, 255 60 15 tire on the back and a 245 60 15 tire on the front with either a 15x7 or 15x8 rim.

I'm running 18's on my 72, but bear with me. I have 245/45/18's at 26.7" tall on 18x8" wide rims with 4.5" backspacing in front. So whether you're comparing 15"s or 18"s, the overall diameter of the tire is the same and the backspacing of the rims are the same as what you're considering. With that said, I get a slight rub on the passengers side at full turn when I have a passenger with me. It's hitting the bolt on the top that attaches the fender to inner fender. I have 1" lowered coils in front from Coil Spring Specialties, so if I had stock height coils, I bet I wouldn't have the rub. So I think you'd probably be fine with 15x8's/245/60/15's in front if you're at stock coil height.

I'm running 275's on 18x9.5"s in back with no issues

I have 245 60 15 on the front and 275 60 15 on the rear on stock 15 x 7 wheels tires fit good no rubbing anywhere. The corvette wheels were 17x9 front and 17x11 rear. I believe the tires were 285 45 17 and 335 40 17 I test fitted these before I sold them.

I also had wheel vintiques rallys 15x7 and 15x8 with a 4 inch back space. The rears rubbed I believe the rear tires were 285 50 15 the fronts were 235 60 15

Ok thanks,,,the pics help. Im getting closer,,,lol. Not that I couldnt send them back if I didnt like the combo i get. Honestly I think i prefer the look of the 15x7 looking at it from the outside. The 15x8 look really deep in the pics but I also dont want the tires looking pinched because of a 8" tread on a 7" rim. But the 245-60 15 is a definite for the front. Now Ive got to decide if all 15x7 or all 15x8 or 7's in the front and 8's in the back,,especially if I go 255 tire in the back. I guess some people have used the 255 60 on a 7" rim and were happy with the look. Couple of pics I found on the web. 245 60 15 on 15x7" on all fours. I was worried the 245 would look too short in the back but these pics dont look bad.

69gtocv 08-14-2020 02:06 PM

I had 235/60/15 on 15x7 Rally II's on the front of my 69, 255/60/15 on 15x7 in the back. I had the Rallys already, but if I had to have bought some, I would have done a 15x8" wide rear rim. My opinion is the 7" wide rim is too narrow on the 255. I think I'd do 15x8's all the way around if you can get the 15x8" in a 4.5 backspace

scott70 08-15-2020 08:21 AM

I've got a 15x7 4" bs rally wheel and a 245 60 15 bfg coming. That way I can see in person what it will look like on the front and back. Want to make sure it fills the wheel openings good. If it needs more in the back I agree...255 will need the 15x8.

69 Limelight 08-15-2020 10:01 AM

I have a 69 GTO Hardtop. I run factory 15x7 Rally II's front and rear. I run BFG TA's front and rear. 225/70 x 15 on front that measure 27" inflated on car with 12,000 miles on them. 245/60 x 15 on rear that measure 26" inflated on car (same mileage but with more treadwear due to a few burnouts). At the front lower corner of rocker panel molding to ground measures 10" and at rear lower corner of rocker panel molding to ground measures 10 1/4" (no one in car and 3/4 tank of fuel) (do have a little stiffer spring on rear because do a lot of long distance trip driving and trunk is usually pretty full). On rear, closest point is tire to tailpipe (have 2 1/2" Pypes system mounted as close to frame rail was possible without rattling). Plenty of room sidewall to frame, and wheel well lip). On front closest point is at bottom of wheel well opening lip at rear of wheel well when turning. Could not use any larger diameter tire but, 69 front fender wheel well opening has a slight forward hook to it at bottom rear and I'm thinking a 70 is straight down. Some of these body guys would know if 69 and 70 use same front fenders. Oh, by the way, factory disc brakes which, if I understand correctly moves wheels outboard a fraction of an inch. So there you go.

scott70 08-15-2020 10:42 AM

From what I've read the 70-72 have more room up front compared to the 68-69. I hope these 245 60 15 on 15x7 measure more than 26" ..Supposed to be 26.6" so we'll see.
