1964 grille
What color is the grill insert on a 64 goat grille, would it be satin black
|
I use Rust-O-Leum #7777 or the SEM Trim Black. The SEM product is easier to work with, and I've had good luck with adherence. I noticed it is available from WalMart online at $13.62.
Masking the unpainted areas takes a lot of time, but pays off. |

I removed what was left of the paint on my Tempest grilles for a different look.
I’m doing it on my Le Mans as well, I like the look of the bright grille bars and surrounds. Of course I can always paint them later if I think it will look better. |
I use the thin 3/16" pin stripe tape for the initial taping. It bends a lot easier on the radiuses. Then go with your wider masking tape, whatever brand you like. Like Dick said, take your time masking. The painting is the easy part!!

As long as we are talking grilles. I have an observation and maybe the ‘64 brain trust has already seen this. My ‘64 Tempest (10C build date) was crashed in the RF corner very early in its life, like within the first 6 months. I believe one grille is original and one was replaced when repaired. One grille has a riveted vertical reinforcement brace on the back side and one does not. Has anyone observed this before?

I have seen GTOs with both riveted and non riveted grills. I have been fortunate to have judged 64s at POCI and GTOAA for A LONG TIME. That question has come up several times. Some opinions are both pro and con. I have never seen anything in writing to confirm or deny. My personal thought is a production change early in the 64 build year. No reason to build two different grills otherwise the same.
Maybe an answer will come forth in this thread!! "Bill"! |
Which is why I added the build date of our car to my post. As stated, mostly likely a mid-year change. Now the question is, when did the change occur? It may be hard to determine as there are so few cars out there with their original parts still with the car and known to be so.

Exactly, Rich. Maybe some of the 64 owners will check their grills and post here...

My ‘64 has the riveted support. 06B build date, Pontiac plant. It could be production change or just different suppliers.

Mine is an April '64 build and the one's on the car when I bought it did not have the brace. I replaced the original set with a much better set, which did not have that support. I do have one other set without the support also.

Interesting. Mine is first week, April, Pontiac, and does have the support, rivets...
