Interesting '72 GTOs & LeMans . . .

Figured that I ought to start my own '72 thread instead of hijacking other threads.

Most, if not all, of this stuff has been posted here at some point, but it's kinda fun to bring it up again anyway.

Here's a VERY unusual pre-PHS invoice for a '72 GTO 455HO Sundance car, along with a slightly incorrect 2005 Washington Times story about this very car.

http://goliath.ecnext.com/coms2/gi_0...-back-the.html

PS - thanks to our own Steve V. for sending my that invoice. LOTS of "9D" options!

And a REALLY nicely optioned Wilderness Green HO GTO, shipped to a Missouri dealer with an unusual name . . .

Carl Craig sent me this one.

And another loaded up '72 HO GTO, special paint too. Wonder what color this one is / was?

I "get" the black cordova top and Ivory guts, but what's paint code "1"?

Lloyd-TX 09-26-2011 02:51 PM

And, speaking of Wilderness Green, check out the invoice from this 33 option WW5 car. A power bench seat car no less!

It's highly likely you'll never see another WW5 car with fewer options!

Another modestly optioned, bench seat WW5 car. Lucy Blue and Ivory guts, with the "sperm whale" stripes.

Judge273 09-26-2011 03:12 PM

Lloyd,

Has a 72 WW4 optioned car appeared yet? BVZ should investigate that one...

oPh says he has: http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...&highlight=ww4

Oops - just proved myself wrong. Here are the docs for Joe Lenoir's (RIP) seven option Sundance / Dark Saddle WW5.

Not to my knowledge, Mike.

I'd darned sure like to see some cars and / or docs for a WW4 optioned car. Only 125 built, vs. 290 WW5s!

For some reason, I had ALWAYS ass-umed that the WW4 option was available onyl without the GTO option. Apparently, from reading further, I was wrong - imagine that, LOL!

based on my 71 orbit orange car with the same 1 in the paint code on the phs, it must just be for any special order color.

do you have the complete invoice on this one??? if so post it please.

my goodness, include the individual options with the ww5 and this thing has a few. wow.

muscle_collector 09-26-2011 04:25 PM

i just saw the invoice you posted on the other thread that shows the solid special and it has paint code as UU. i guess that blows my theory of the paint code 1 being any special order color???????????????

Here's the invoice for the Monarch Yellow WW5 GTO I nearly bought out of Austin a few years back. 33 option count as well.

Dealers and / or buyers sure seemed to load up the '72 HO cars!

Might as well post the special order paint (Cumberland Blue - paint code "UU") '72 GTO that I already posted in the '71 thread.

J GLASGO 09-26-2011 07:00 PM

My dad ordered a 72 Lemans Sport when i was a kid.It was Adriatic Blue, black bucket seats, console, guages with clock, tinted glass,Formula steering wheel,400 -4bbl,no ac.It came with dark blue wheels, dog dishes, and blackwalls.I remember waxing those splitters every time he would clean the car. They were the absolutely coolest pipes ever.None of my friends could believe it came that way. In 73 he put a set of Rocket wheels on it.It was bad a$$.I wanted that car so bad but he sold it in 74 to buy a 74 Lemans Sport.I was heart broken. I had a chance to buy the car in the early 80,s,as the elderly man that bought it let his grandson drive it,and he swiped the side of the highway concrete divider. At the time i did not do bodywork, and took my body man with me to look at it,and he said it was too bad. Now years later, doing my own body work,i could have fixed that car easily. What a shame. So,i have always had a soft spot for those 72 LeMans,s.But they gotta have those side splitters!

And you want me to start cutting teeth on 72's already .... sheeesh lol

=======================

Question on this WW5 business ....
Some are $987 and some are $1012
are the $1012 4spd cars - and $987 Auto's ?

or wtf ?

The Boss 09-26-2011 08:16 PM

Other way around.

There was also early & late year pricing - but the higher priced one was the auto.

Thanks Boss.

So your $1006 was a later pricing Automatic.
And the $1012 are the early pricing Auto.
Got it
i think
lol

OrbitOrange !!!!!!!!

just kidding
but i'm working on its designation - its likely going to boil down to meaning a completely non-available color for that model year / time frame.

It "could" have been OO though.
Maybe even BLACK.

4 was "primer" code.

work in progress

The Boss 09-26-2011 09:45 PM

No, 1,006 was early pricing 4spd, they did away with a tire charge I believe part way through the year. Lloyd will help you out with this - he figured it all out a couple years ago.

I'll add my former GTO in here...what's interesting about this car, is it is a pretty early production car and there is NO billing on the PHS for the 455HO engine. I have only seen one other 455HO with a lower VIN from Pontiac plant and that one too, did NOT have the 455HO engine billed either!

Baron Von Zeppelin 09-26-2011 11:44 PM

I got the handle on the WW5 costs now.
Glad such a wide assortment was posted !

Early Auto = $1012
Early 4spd = $1006

Later Auto = $987
Later 4spd = $982

Yeh PB - that Juniper GTO is Sweet !
The Lucy Blue Stripe Car with the Free HO was Wicked.

that is an odd ball, ain't it? :) 4spd w/bench seat. I noticed it didn't have the pull straps, and I believe those are what you get with the sport option interior stuff(straps). I don't think you got them with a bench seat car anyway?? I don't know who ended up buying it out of Wagners, and that was all the documentation I could get out of the sales guy. Not sure if he had the PHS on it or not. We have the VIN...would be neat to see that car at a show and see who owns it.

Here's an interesting WW5 thread from over 4 years back . . .

Be sure and read supercarbob's post #21 for a very comprehensive reply concerning all of the WW5 option pricing differences.

Here's my WW5 Lucy Blue 455HO 4spd Lemans w/pewter interior. Okay, it's not a WW5 lemans :). If you look though, you will see all the options in the GTO only WW5 option package listed separately. It has a few other goodies too.

This one is a time capsule, has all original items still on the car...Shocks, exhaust, batt cables, core support filler panel, etc. I just hooked back up the original unitized ignition and it runs great! I've found an original build sheet under the gas tank and it still has the paper ID stickers on the springs.

I have talked to the original owner who told me he ordered it to fool the insurance companies. He said his first one wasn't fooled, but the second one was! lol
