All it would take to make the plate work is to grind or file on the plate at the lifter or lifters that is to tight on maybe one or two lifters, then adjust the plate down accordingly. A couple lifters are not letting the plate drop enough. I mentioned it a few posts earlier, Randy’s videos have said the exact same thing.

If your not willing to grind on the plate, bale on these 2148s and get a link bars set up. Personally I would get these: https://butlerperformance.com/i-2445...tegory:1234800

I too mentioned the grinding early on (post 92) - according to Randy it’s required to fine tune. Not saying that will definitely solve the issue but it should be tried.

Hey Hotbird can you share the details of your set-up?

Here's the thread from awhile back:

I appreciate all those that have taken the time to help me try to sort through this.

I have decided I'll be ordering the Johnson lifters that Jay S linked in his post. It's time for me to move on from the plate and or dog bones and get things back on track. I like tinkering and understand its part of the hobby but I have spent 8 plus hours trying to fit the plate and or dog bones over the last couple of weeks, mostly on weekends or evenings and am not finding it enjoyable anymore. I spent probably 2 hours a couple of days ago starting over from square one on the plate after reading everyone's suggestions. I removed all of the push rods and tried to adjust the plate one last time and can't get it close enough to convince me with some more time spent grinding that its going to work and have ample margin for error.

I want to get the motor assembled so I can get the parts out of my shop and try to get caught up on work projects.

Thanks again to all those that tried to help.

Will, so far so good. Don’t have many miles yet , tho.

1980TA, is there any chance of the dog ones trying to cock sideways as they are being held on one edge instead of the center? Just wondering. Please keep us up to date.

Murf

Have you put any more miles on it? Any issues or is all well?

Murf 11-23-2021 01:37 PM

Sorry Will, I probably won’t have any news for quite a while. I’m trying to sort out pushrod length, polylocs & valve covers. I’m messing with putting A/C on it over the winter,

Right now I’m pounding out floor tile getting ready to install LVT. Hopefully the last of my house projects for the winter.
I will post up if I get a chance to put any miles on it.

Happy Thanksgiving!
Murf

Thanks- I’m installing a viintage air sure fit system on mine over the winter- hoping to start in next couple weeks.

Cool, I’ll hit ya up if I run into any stumbling blocks. 😁
I think I’m gonna use an underdash unit with the sure fit components under the hood. I’ve heard the underdash unit has a larger evaporator but I haven’t checked with V/A on that though.

I bought their compressor bracket and that’s when I decided I need to try and get more valve cover clearance.

Good luck with yours & keep us in the loop, please.

Will do!

conversion update

The speedpro/ford dogbone conversion in project Frankenstein now has about 3000 street miles and has been abused a lot and the lifter conversion is working beautifully and is quiet as a mouse. Has many 5800-6000 rpm hits on it. this combo is a 400 based 461 with Jim Hand ported 6x heads, 237/243 at .050 Howards hydraulic roller, and Holley terminator fuel injection. Im very satisfied at this point and will be doing another one in the near future.

68hotbird, when you do the next one could you do a little write up with some pics, please? I’d like to see exactly how you go about this.

Thanks

conversion update

I have a lot of pictures from this build what specifically are you looking for?

Murf 11-28-2021 06:06 PM

Just general stuff. How far the links are ground & where. Did you attach the spyders back together or are they two separate pieces?

Thanks
Murf

68hotbird 11-28-2021 07:55 PM

Spyder

spider is 2 separate pieces. All of the grinding is on the bottom side on an angle. I also milled .030 off the underside of the dogbones to keep the lifters from raising them up at max lift.

As an additional piece of info, 68hotbird posted these photos of his mill modification to the dog bones. It is post #166. Thanks 68hotbird!

1980 TA 12-01-2021 09:12 PM

I'll add you might check your block and see if it has a cast in rib between the lifters. My block had a vertical rib running between the pair of lifters and was the biggest obstacle in fitting the dog bones. In checking the pics I could find on the dog bone conversions it did not appear that those blocks had the cast in rib. Several of my dog bones were in the .070 thick range and I wasn't comfortable with them that thin.

On a good note, I have the johnson lifters installed and the pushrods are ordered and should be here tomorrow. I hope to have the valve train buttoned up this weekend and finish off the rest of the install.

If all goes well I hope to drop the motor in the chassis the week of the 11th!!!!!!

Can we get a update on the Ford Spider HT2148 modification, I have purchased all the parts but have not pulled the trigger on installing them yet. Seems that the threads on this modification have cooled down. I won’t to go with the plate at first but
did not see a lot of good reviews on it.

You know, nothing wrong with link bars. In fact top fuel funny cars and top fuel dragsters use link bars on their roller lifters so must not be such a bad design.
