Is it too late to get a head-on shot of the "Keep your GM" decal on the air cleaner?

Great pictures! Does the car still have the original tailpipe tips and brackets? Got to like what is probably a one of one.

Held for Ransom 07-11-2015 03:56 PM

Air cleaner must have been redone. I can't believe the factory would have put a '73 air cleaner decal on, especially with square-cut corners.

Such a cool car! And I don't wish to be argumentative in the least, but for clarification, blue and green Cordova tops were announced on January 5, 1972 and reached production about February 1.

RamAir 07-11-2015 04:54 PM

That's correct. He requested that color specifically and the factory built it. It started as a '73 regular production color

I'm confused - if green was a mid-year color, how could it be a "'73 regular production color?"

RamAir 07-12-2015 08:47 AM

That is the claim the owner is making so I am confused as well since that color was indeed available after Jan. 72. Maybe the selling dealer wasn't informed of that production change. That's his story and he's sticking to it. Unbelievable car either way ;-)

Judge273 07-12-2015 10:16 AM

When dealing with the original owners and their stories about the purchase deal. It's always a strange transaction then as it is now.

Imagine a customer with that order, and a saleman going thru the big checklist items.
Anything else?
I Want a green vinyl roof too.
Okay, but I will need to pull some strings with the boss's. I be right back...

Diego 07-13-2015 12:51 PM

I'm going to guess the original owner has been confused for 43 years.

It really is amazing what your memory will do. Prior to finding the picture of my car I would have sworn that the 70 TA I had over 20 years ago was white - sure enough, it was blue!

Baron Von Zeppelin 07-13-2015 08:34 PM

The Trim Code for Green when it came in for 72 was E / 3.
And believe it was darker by several shades than what subject car is wearing.

Trim Code for Green in 73 was G / 5 and think it was more the Light Jade shade like shown on this car.
Subject car shows Code G on trim tag too.

Guy might have wanted a lighter shade than 72 Code E , and they made it happen ... idunno.

{Based entirely on data from UltimateGTO site .... fwiw}

I have a hypothesis on the prices (all are higher across the whole board).
Will post about it later and then maybe someone can make it right or wrong.

On your Invoice - all the amounts are higher on everything, including base price too.

In speculation - I am thinking the Excise Tax Repeal we see mentioned on some Invoices was in active play on your Invoice.

As in, the beginning year model prices ($1012 Auto WW5 Option Cost time period) were further increased by the Excise Tax. Putting your WW5 Auto up to $1039.
This must have only been in effect for a short period before the Excise Tax was repealed effective 12/11/71.
At the same time the excise was repealed , PMD must have also in addition had a full revision of their own A-Body pricing structure as well. Since the WW5 Auto didn't just drop back to $1012 - it went down to $987.
And all associated prices went down lower as well.

Best I can put together without any supporting bulletins or memos at hand.
If we get enough cars , we will probably see some more examples like yours in the same short time period of invoicing.

If the original purchaser of your car had waited about 1 more week to order, they would have saved around $300+/- . Which would be about $3000-4000 in car money today.

Really appreciate you sharing yours with us.
If anyone can further elaborate on the pricings, please do.

That's interesting about the Excise tax, I didn't notice the price increase across the board. I was actually thinking MSRP price increase had something to do with the 80 amp alternator.

Is there a way to tell on the PHS how this car was ordered?

Also, I have a couple copies of WW5 PHS sheets that I have come across. They may be something you already have. I will dig them up and PM them to you.

Thanks again for all the great info!
