If I have the opportunity I'll have mine on a bench to test. My money is that they flow much more than advertised.
We've been running one on Dad's engine that I consider a large displacement higher HP application for a few years now and honestly it works very well, looks like a carb allowing all the factory appearing stuff to bolt right up, and still makes the HP it was originally dyno'd with, which is well past the amount Holley says it should do and doesnt even hint at being out of breath.

Well worth the entry fee and fun to data log and tinker with at the track

The NTK O2 sensor has higher resolution and makes for better datalogging. But not sure if the base Snipers support it.

There was a thread on the Holley site that explained how to re-pin for the NTK sensor. Otherwise we are stuck using the Bosch, which has actually been fine for us for years now on 5 different wideband applications. Others seem to struggle with it for what ever reason.

HWYSTR455 08-18-2023 01:41 PM

They work for the intended purpose, was just commenting that the NTKs are better for datalogging. With the Sniper, there's no real need to use an NTK. Price tag is a little bit of a choke point too.

I'm pretty happy with it as is so never saw the need to dig into that deal. I'm only speaking to what I've read.

I bought the least expensive version of the previous generation Sniper for a 535 just to get the car running and sorted out, after which I planned to upgrade. But I haven't found it wanting in any areas, so I'm just going to leave it there. The only thing I was dissatisfied with was the throttle linkage...originally too short and stiff and so the gas pedal was basically all or nothing...fixed it with a $10 throttle lever extension and all is good now. It looks like the new version fixed this issue along with a bunch of other nice features. I'm happy Holley is investing in improvements rather just making changes to cut costs.

As the sniper two starts hitting more of the market now there seems to be an inherent flaw.
Apparently Holley still hasn't released a compatable cable to tune with the laptop.

That's a fairly major deal since tuning with the handheld is very minimal. Crazy they released that knowingly and crazier it hasn't been mentioned by others sooner.

I guess people are still just slapping these things on and hoping it'll tune itself, which honestly just barely touches the surface.

I believe there's supposed to be a bluetooth module available that plugs into the same cable to which the small display normally connects. I has assumed that one could connect to a computer that way and tune. But now that I think about it, wondering if that Bluetooth module simply provides the same capabilities as the small display...that is, it's intended for folks who would rather use their phone than the small display.

...edit...I just read the following on line "A Bluetooth-capable module with iOS or Android smartphone connectivity. The Sniper 2 setup, tuning changes, gauge display, data logging, and tune storage are stored on the phone for easy retrieval. The Sniper 2 app also provides contact with Holley tech service."

I thought I'd mention it here, I read the issue over on the Holley site. Andy that does a bunch of tuning for customers uses his laptop, I guess he got his first Sniper 2 customer and can't hook his laptop up via cable like the sniper 1 version, which is how I also prefer to do it.

HWYSTR455 10-06-2023 11:21 AM

There's a bunch of people who make the cable, but you need to know which CAN protocol the Sniper 2 uses. Could probably shotgun it and try all 4 protocols, but it would probably be better to wait for the Holley release.

Should be easy enough to figure out which protocol the Sniper 2 is, it kinda works or it doesn't.

You can always tune using the SD card, though is a little cumbersome.

Holley still hasn't provided a dedicated can bus on these things?

Formulajones 10-06-2023 09:52 PM

Nope. Kinda surprised at that given the amount of people, especially businesses, that rely on laptops for tuning. Kinda necessary for any live tuning, especially on a dyno.

HWYSTR455 10-07-2023 09:58 AM

It will be available soon, they are well aware of the 'issue' and are working on it.

Have to keep in mind that the Sniper is an entry level system, and many don't ever use a laptop and have better than just acceptable results.

If it's such a big concern, just buy the original version, which is still currently available. Or, move up to one of the better systems, like the Super Sniper, X-Flow, Stealth HP-based systems, or Terminator/HP/Dominator systems.

Just think what it would be like without the offering.

Formulajones 10-07-2023 10:10 AM

I think people are buying the Sniper 2 not realizing the can bus isn't available yet, so they go to hook the laptop up and bam, can't do it. It's not like Holley is telling everyone the can bus isn't available yet before purchase, lol.

I've found after running these things for quite a few years now that laptop tuning is almost a must. The self tune only gets you so far, and with most hotrods out there not being stock, it's more of a challenge for the self tune. There are things that need to be done on the laptop to improve drivability, not necessarily performance.

Those that just slap them on a stock engine have a much better chance of success without the laptop.

I run the Super Sniper on both my Chevelle and dad's GTO, for the simple reason of having extra inputs and outputs. Otherwise they function exactly the same.

HWYSTR455 10-07-2023 12:12 PM

The CAN bus is there, it's just there isn't a laptop cable currently available.

Holley will also be offering a bluetooth module, the 558-498 part, which should make things a little easier. Who knows, they may do away with the cables all together, or make IOS apps, but sure there's a good reason for the delay.

As stated, you can still tune via the SD card if there's a specific reason. The functionality is still there, it just not via the cable.

Formulajones 10-07-2023 04:29 PM

If they do away with the cable you can count me out. Holley has assured those concerned it's coming, I just don't know why it was thought ok to release the new sniper without it.
I would much rather do live tuning than using the SD card all the time. That gets cumbersome and time consuming downloading and uploading back and forth. I can change jets in a carb faster than that. Lol

HWYSTR455 10-23-2023 12:33 PM

Cable is now listed on the Holley site:

https://www.holley.com/products/fuel.../parts/558-495

EFI SystemPros has it listed too:

https://www.efisystempro.com/can-usb-dongle-558-443

Still no release confirmation on the bluetooth module 558-498 but should be any day now...

They also released an $1100 kit for folks with the original Sniper who want to upgrade to Sniper 2....it's basically the throttle body, a new handheld, and an adaptor harness. The video makes it seem like you have to start from scratch in terms of set-up & tuning, which kind of surprised me. I think it would be nice to be able transfer the tune to the Sniper 2.

Is the warranty on these still just 90 days?
