Just looking at this pic and it looks like from the factory they were a little farther back than what the template would suggest?

Picture shows a remote mirror not a standard mirror in the thread.

My car has a factory non remote mirror in that same position. I'm adding a remote mirror. Anyone have the template for the remote mirror?

I'm interested in this positioning conversation too. So some factory non-remote mirrors were installed further back (to match remote) and some factory were installed way forward?

My late 1965 is non factory non remote and is installed like the included factory assembly line picture position, further back. Works great and the wing vent doesn't hit it. But now it sounds like the correct position would only be way up front for non-remotes?

Thanks!

So nobody ever replied after I asked for a template. I can say with certainty, that there is 2 different rearward positions for remote vs non remote mirror. I went ahead and drilled my door before paint for a remote mirror, in the factory non remote late build rearward position. All of the glass, framework and such was out of the door when I did it. After I got the car back from paint, and put all of the door back together, I couldn't open the vent window all the way because the mirror was too far forward.:doh: Back to paint.

For 1965 Tempest Series models.
Outside mirrors were an extra cost option in 1965.

The Remote outside rear view mirror is mounted in only one location from my research.
It is definitely rearward of the wing window for ample clearance.

The standard outside mirror was mounted in two different locations.
One forward of wing window and the other mounted rearward of the wing window.

The first three ‘65 are Original paint.
The 4th car is a correctly restore to Original one family owned example.

The standard mirror is shown in the two different locations.

All these cars are Original paint.

Yep. My factory non remote mirror was in the same position as 05C above. The factory remote mirror sets about another inch rearward of the one pictured in 05C.

I have a 65 LH door that I wondered why there was a big hole (and a couple of small ones) right behind the wing window. I now know that it was a remote mirror. Frank's has a 65 LH door showing the same holes. My 64 had non remote mirror mounting forward of wing, not sure if factory or not.

My ‘65 factory installed (early design) remote mirror.
Large hole for the sheathed cables and two small holes for the sheet metal screws.
