Tom Molnar just wrote and informed me that they have enough orders of the crank to make a run of them so it's going to happen. I have no idea if and how many "extras" will be made so if you want one, please consider ordering it.

Thank you for your effort in talking them into bringing these to market! :beerchug:

I reached out to Molnar and they are willing to do a run of 3.25” main 4.00” stroke cranks as well if anyone is interested. They need a minimum order of 5 to move forward. I’m in for one. They are contacting all the major Pontiac vendors gauge interest.

So I just stumbled on to this thread. I was getting ready to order one of Butler’s 4” rotating assemblies for the RA III in my ‘70 TA, but I’m happy to join this club if it helps us out. I think the Butler assembly requires running a BBC journal.

I’d consider a 4” crank for my 400 and one for the 428 that’s sitting on a stand in my garage. Plan on using that as an interim replacement while the 400 gets built, but at some point I want that engine to find its way into some street rod/bracket car.

Correct but Tom Molnar is also producing 6.625 length 2.20 journal .980 pin floating rods for those wanting to use off the shelp Pontiac pistons.

Ordered one set. I already forgot the name of the gentleman I talked to but it wasn't Tom. Had a bit of a chat with him. I asked about balancing and he said they could also do that. They just need a piston weight or even the pistons on hand. He mentioned Icon pistons, I asked about AutoTech. He said they were also a very good piston and the compression height can be changed on their shelf pistons for an added fee.

I just looked on their website. I didn’t see the 4.00 stroker crank listed, so I sent them a note and will follow up with them tomorrow. Will also inquire about the rods.

This is a limited run that he is doing, the crank and rods may or may not make it as a listed production item.

3.25" main, 4" stroke MOLNAR forged crankshaft

Excellent! That would serve the 421, 428 and de-stroked 455 market.

Lots of 428 and 455 blocks out there.

Better to also have availability of 3.25" main journal, 4" stroke for 428 and 455 blocks. Best is the 3" main journal, 4" stroke for a 389 or 400. But with the eventual growing scarcity of non 557 400 blocks, the 3.25" main journal 4" stroke in a 421, 428 or 455 is a valuable alternative to instead using a 350 block.

I just put a deposit down on one. They only have a couple remaining, from what I was told.

Dragncar 09-30-2022 09:43 PM

How much are they and what do they want for a deposit ?

Mo 09-30-2022 11:34 PM

I think the first post had prices. I paid around $1100 with shipping. I put half down but I think you can put down less.

tooski 10-01-2022 09:45 AM

For my 3" main 4" stroke, Molnar did not take a down payment. Just my cc info and will charge me when they are ready to ship.

1_Wild_Cat 10-01-2022 10:20 AM

They initially did the same (no dp) with me but I had called before it was a for sure thing. I called back to make sure I was confirmed and ended up giving a $200 deposit.

racerboy 10-06-2022 11:26 AM

~$1100 is same quote I received. I got my name on the list today for the first run.

Just out of curiosity, what rod/piston combo were you guys thinking of running? I’m going to be running my #12 heads, so I will need a dish.

Hey I'm confused here. I've been talking with molnar and decided I wanted to order one of the 4 inch stroke 2.20 rod journals 3" main journal cranks and corresponding rods. However when I called and spoke with Ed he stated they have 2 different cranks being produced. Both are 3 inch main journals but one is 2.20 rod journal and they are making a 6.8 rod to go with it and stated icon has off the shelf pistons, the other is pontiac rod journals and using factory style 6.625 rods.

So neither are what I have read on here and curious what ones you have chosen and why or if you guys even knew this.

Are you sure this is correct? I don’t think they are having two different runs of the 4.00 stroke crank w/ 3.00” mains. I think they are just doing a run of of the Pontiac-length rods that still use the BBC journal. The idea being, from the conversation I had, was it would open up more options for piston choices. At least that was my understanding. Happy to reach out to them for the exact specs.

More than sure, Ed told me over the phone and I emailed Tom and he co firmed it. Two different 4" stroke 3.0" main cranks one for bbc 2.20 and the other for pontiac rod journals.

racerboy 11-23-2022 10:19 PM

OK, cool. I spoke with Marshall today, but only to confirm that they were doing a run of Pontiac-length rods with the bbc 2.20 journals. I guess it's good that there are multiple options, especially if you already have a set of good rods with the Pontiac big-end.
