I run 17x8 US Mag Bandits on my car. The tire I run is 245/45/17. You can easily run this tire, even with some drop in the front. I have a coil cut in the front.
I believe LeighP runs a 255/55/17....

The 2802 needs a little gas to break tires loose. It also had a spacer with a p4b which might affect power down low.
2801 didn't need as much gas to fry tires....
