Got the engine fired up a couple weeks ago! Cranked right up and good oil pressure at idle. Temp seemed to level off just above 180. Engine sounds real healthy. :)

BTW. stock pistons last about a miniute under detonation or preignition, i busted 2 engines...

My suggestion on the split would be to sand blast both sides of it to remove the rust, then weld it from the back side. You'll have a heavier, stronger (and unseen) weld that you won't risk grinding...
