In case anyone's interested, the head gasket failure was due to a bad gasket. There was an obvious defect in this gasket. I should have caught it when building the motor, but didn't. Now I'm paying...

Bolt the head back down with the old head gasket...

Bolt the head back down with the old head gasket and apply compressed air to the spark plug holes. Who knows what you'll find. Maybe those 2 pistons are missing rings. Stranger things have happened....
