Default Rear End Noise

Greeting folks , have not posted in a while. I have a 1971 Pontiac GTO with a 10 bolt BOP rear end. I rebuilt it about 20 years ago with a New Ring Gear and pinion, bearings and an Auburn Posi Unit.

I really do not drive the car much anymore, on my maintenance runs I noticed a whine coming from the rear axle area. It is consistent on acceleration or deceleration, and does not change tones when transferring wight with a body roll.

I am thinking it the carrier bearings, seems right?

If this is the case should I not be able to just replace the carrier bearings and adjust the backlash and keep the pinion depth as set?

Is backlash was set properly when it was installed , should not change if its the carrier bearings. But if they are bad there is metal contamination in the oil and replace pinion bearings as well.

But i would check backlash and pattern before taking it apart

Is the whine generally at specific speeds?....accel or decel whines are usually gear related

Carrier bearings make "rumble" about 15mph. Pinion bearings make a whir noise. Axle bearings can make various noises. Sounds like pinion bearing to me if it's a bearing issue.
